It was a long time ago, back in the late 70s. I'm not sure whether it was as well known back then. (Long story short) Had sailed with Gas Turbine Power Generation Unit bound for Iraq. Had been doing pre-commissioning checks as the boat sailed from England to Jordan. Came off a boat at Aqaba and took an overnight taxi to Amman to catch a morning flight back to London. Probably passed Petra about 2:00am and I was asleep on the back seat.
Later I flew to Baghdad and continued working on the same GTPGU. That's when I went to Babylon.
so, its 6, sue me. i cant decide which one to remove, i really cant. Actually, yes its easy. Remove London, since it is so obviously the best city in the world. It was particularly nice, sunny and quiet yesterday when i visited.
Mexico City is utterly amazing, the rival of any European city, and much more affordable and accessible for those of us in the USA.
Honorable mention to La Paz, Bolivia, one of the most interesting places I've ever been.
Collioure, France is one my favorite places in Europe. Also Atrani, Italy.
Not much into big European places like London, Paris, etc. YMMV.
Yep Collioure is a ripper. Up before sunrise, run up past the 13th C windmill through the vinyards up to Fort St Elme and along the ridge as the sun rises up above the Med. Back down and a swim in the Med. Breakfast at the Templiers surrounded by all those paintings.
I don't particularly like cities. Verona, Salzburg and Oxford the exceptions.
Favourite places?
Gimmelwald, Sonogno, Loches, Villefranche de Conflent, Isle of Raasay, Torridon. Anywhere between Lukla and EBC. I could probably come up with another 50 but I shall leave it there.
Bigger cities, aside from Reykavík which is not that big but I'll put it in this list because it's the capital and biggest city in that area and has plenty of international recognition: Amsterdam Reykjavík Vancouver Washington DC Glasgow/Edinburgh (if the cities are < 1 hour from each other Im' going to cheat and add both)
Smaller cities/towns, these were cool to visit but definitely have some tourist trap areas, besides maybe Seydisfjordur because it's just so small: Killarney Seydisfjordur Rothenburg ob der Tauber Flagstaff Bruges/Ghent (cheating and adding both as they're < 1 hour from each other)

Color me shocked that someone else has been there. I spent a week there....every morning swimming in the Med before everyone else was out. Fantastic. When I retire, I want to spend a summer there.
Oakland is actually pretty awesome unless you happen to be racist, and my spider sense is tingling based on the tone of your post. The locals would smell that out in a hurry.
Oakland is disgusting and dangerous. It's horrible, in part, because of horrible people like you.

Large parts of Oakland are dangerous and dirty. But it also has beautiful areas and vibrant and interesting neighborhoods. The same cannot be said for cities like Flint and Gary. Oakland has has some of the best trail running you will find anywhere.
