One HUGE opportunity missed by Newbury Park tonight. Last year they were the first team ever to put 4 under 9:00 in the same race. Tonight they could've put 5 and fell a little short. I don't know what happened to Leo Young, but I know he will rebound.
According to Lex in an interview, he was very sick for a few days before this race. Maybe he caught whatever Lex had a couple weeks ago, it’s hard for one person in a household to get sick without spreading it to the rest of the family.
3x1200 @3200 with 1 minute rest is INSANE and unnecessary. even if you want to run that pace for 1200 meters, why not give at least 1:1 rest. which would still be an INSANE workout.
i respect brosnan and love what he has done with these kids. but that doesn't mean everything he does is right.
I noticed the same thing in terms of that first 100m or so being very chaotic for both of the Young brothers, in addition of course to a bunch of the other boys in the field we aren't talking about. Ultimately too many guys on the starting line and that's Rich G's fault.
If C. Sahlman was in a race like the one LV ran 8:29 in, all signs point towards Colin running significantly faster than he did tonight, but not due to the pacing or too many people being on the track as that was never an issue for Colin.
People need to understand that racing your teammates is not the same as racing against guys from other teams. Ultimately this turned into two teammates doing a TT together. It's just not the same, especially when Colin knows he's gonna beat Lex. Put him in a race where he's got real competition and you'll get a different result.
Also, Leo led the pack through in 61.1. Just because Tim said it was a 60.8 while announcing doesn't mean that's what it actually was.
Colin went through at 61.5 first lap then 67.2 second lap which is not atypical at all in a race won in 8:34 that doesn't have a rabbit. Colin also paced that first lap a bit better and looked like a real pro out there being super relaxed in 5th place the majority of the first lap.
What were they supposed to do? The entire field was packed like sardines and all 4 NP kids were next to each other on the inside. If they get out slow, they get swallowed up by the pack and have to spend more energy fighting through the field to take the lead back.
They were like 28 the first 200 with most of that just positioning in the first 150 and then ran a 32.
Yep, the crazy large field dictated abnormal early tactics. In a more traditionally sized field they don't have to worry about falling or getting stuck in a pack. I'm not saying it's the only reason the couldn't get under 8:30 but it was part of the reason. Beyond Leo being gassed Colin did not look himself. He beat Lex on guts. Lex was the only one of them who was sharp.
If you were watching the entire meet, you'd have seen one of the girls in the invitational mile get tripped up on the first turn, and she seemed pretty seriously injured. This was just about half an hour before the 3200. In a race with nearly 30 runners, all of whom are very fast, I can't fault them for going out in 29-30 to stay out of trouble. Beats getting taken off the track on cart.
When did they do this workout? Race week? I'm not saying I'm better than Sean, but I have my kids do maintenance sessions the week of meets so they're fresh.
The first excuse people always jump to is "pacing" , if they went out too fast that is on them, period. These guys are so expertly coached they do not know the difference yet between 61 and 64-65? Come on now.
There is no reason to be out in well under an even or negative split type scenario, not with the coaching they get.Guys should know by now you can make up tons of time by going big negative, not out over the edge. Personally, I do not think if they ran 61.x to 62.x, that, that would wreck the day anyway.
The pacing was new excuse, but I’m sure under the right conditions and pacing they could’ve run sub 8:30 especially with an 8:33 and 7:58 on smaller meets and good foot Speed. All in all just bummed to see such a great opportunity wasted.
Maybe there’s too much pressure. everyone is expecting them to run each race faster than the last and run a pb. But we all know it doesn’t work that way.

The week of meets? How many weeks are they not racing?
It’s April, homie. Let the kids scald some workouts.
Almost better...... but actually not quite. I definitely think Colin can break LV's record but has to be in a race with Professionals like PreClassic et...It's so close though - GF 8:34 (2 Mile) is still superior by a hair, given that it was 18 meters longer etc...Bit what must be remembered is that the Young Twins are just Juniors & Brother Aaron as well, which means all three will be back next year with a vengeance! They could all potentially be sub 8:30 & Sub 4 - INSANE!!!! Still, one of these dudes seriously needs to take down Chap's High School 10k Record from 1976 - 28:32. One of the twins could easily do it if they altered their training for sure.
The 3x1200 @3200 (1min) and then 3x400m @1600 (3 min) was way too hard. That looked like an nearly impossible workout, and it was probably a harder effort than many of their races. Bronsan pushed way too hard.
I gotta wonder here...are you saying that you know more than Brosnan?
Agreed haha. Clearly it seems like he knows what he’s doing, given that he has guys running 1:48/3:58/8:33, 4:00/8:39 and 4:04/8:35 (amongst other incredible athletes). Pushed too hard? You wish 😂 plenty more outdoor season to come too, this is just the beginning.
How many sub-1:49 / sub-8:50 guys are there in history?
Colin Sahlman
Aaron Sahlman
Alan Webb
Drew Hunter
Jim Ryun
Ryan didn’t break 9 for 3200 or 2 miles in high school. I think your list is complete minus him. I found an old thread talking about sub 1:50/9:00 and the list was just Webb and Jim Spivey until recently with Ches, Craig Engels and a few others doing it. Andres arroyo is the next closest I can think of. 1:47/8:51

ALSO mind blowing that Aaron is their 4th best runner and has run 1:48/4:05/8:48. The fact that the Young twins and him are just juniors is absolutely crazy. We’ll see what Colin does this year, but I bet they’ll take it even further next year.
Coach Bresnan would be wise to give the group a breather and tone down a bit the pressure on the kids as half of the group seems a bit burned out right now....
