If you take out all the guys marked as seniors on TFRRS (who would not have eligibility this season without COVID), the last marks in qualifying position would be 3:57 and 7:49. The 3k in particular loses a ridiculous amount of its top-end; 9 of the top 11 times would be struck from the lists.
Obviously those are still pretty strong times, but 3:57 and 7:49 are MUCH more sensible. In 2020, with no super spikes, the marks were 3:58 and 7:51. It was the same in 2019. In 2018 it was 3:57 and 7:53. 3:57 and 7:49 are a clear step up, but not by much, and it’s hard to say if even that improvement is due to the spikes (uninterrupted COVID training, faster tracks, and “iron sharpens iron” are all other possible factors).
