Played it with pen and paper, when it was known as 'mastermind', with numbers too sometimes.
Spend my time doing cryptic crosswords of all levels, much less of a rabbit hole time wasting habit. i.e. do it, then get on with my day.
wordle takes about 3 minutes. how fast are you doing these cryptic crosswords?
Maybe one takes you 3 min, but the draw of it is not the complexity, its the desire to have another go ...because its 'only 3min...and it gets habit forming, yet doesn't actually stimulate your brain anymore.
I remember how much time I wasted on pac man, solitaire etc
Cryptic depends on difficulty of compiler, and whether I have seen their work before. Let's say our SMH daily one, ranges between the Thursday edition sometimes down to under 10min (about as fast as one can read, understand, type) to the notorious David Astle (DA), never below 30min....
Cruciverbalism is great, there are a number of different types of directions which you can learn, some DA ones are themed and clued by solving other clues.

Oh come on...everyone's doing it! :) It's a few minutes out of your day, max. I have done several in less than a minute. If you are going to get hooked on a word game, this is the one.
Now, there are unlimited clones out there. I played one a few times one day, but it just didn't have the same appeal, so I just stick with the original...one a day, and that's good enough for me.

(1) Yeah, as someone pointed out, you've missed one of the key draws of Wordle: only one puzzle per day. Agreed that it would be problematic otherwise, because sometimes when it only takes a minute, you'd definitely feel the urge to play again it it were allowed... and again... and again...
(2) Cryptics are great, but they definitely take me more time. I do like the NYT "straight" crosswords. In college, my roommate and I did them cooperatively/competitively (using different colored pens) every day for a year, keeping track of our times. We got the Mondays done in under two minutes a few times, which is definitely approaching the limits of "as fast as one can read and write."
They haven't. The possible word list can and has been extracted from the webpage code and it hasn't changed.
I have heard that and believe it as much as I believed the NYT on Iraq's WMDs. The people who run the puzzles at the NYT think they are god's gift to the puzzle world. They could not resist the chance to get their mitts on Wordle and give it their personal stamp.
My start word is "tears." E is the most common letter, T is the most common consonant. T also starts more words than any other letter. Two vowels so that helps. I never thought of trying a word with four vowels. Sounds like a great strategy.

That may be but unlike the WMDs anyone can verify this from their computer
I started off with a streak of 48 straight but just lost my first game. Won't give away the word, but I had the first two letters and the last two letters and had only two possible options for the middle letter. I guessed wrong.
