You’re correct about the splits, but the pace was still too slow. The first pacer came through 809m in basically 1:57 flat which put Teare at 1:57.7. That’s too much to overcome when you’re shooting for sub 3:50.
They needed Eric Sowinski to pace! So glad they went for it regardless - so close. Like usual athletes show up ready to go but rest of sport is organizational clusterf*ck! There are three paywalls: Peacock, FloTrack, Runnerspace but none found a way to cover this? Or find another meet to host the race that's already scheduled for streaming?
Last year's splits. They were slightly fast thru 809 last year. For the AR attempt, That 1st 209 killed them which then they had to play catch up and went a little too hard the second 200 split.
True, but there's no excuses. You go for it or you don't.
you would think 1:55.5-1:56. Hocker was 1:54ish in Tokyo, no (800m)? Maybe not ready for that speed yet?
If they are dropping 26.x last 200s, that's too much left in the tank...gotta spread that energy out evenly over the early laps to run optimally fast...they'd be fine going 1:55 if they have that much left!
Watch a Monaco diamond league 1500 or rewatch the OG final like your pointed out, that's the way to do it.
Nice job streaming and having the sense to hold the camera sideways. To make that really work you're gonna need a gimbal or at least a mini-tripod setup. A gimbal is a couple hundred bucks
Pacing is hard. Remember how awful Centro’s packers did going out in 54? I do agree it seems weird that the communication to the pacers wasn’t a little better.
And 1:57-1:58 through 809m makes it super tough to have any chance for sub 3:50. As others have said, they needed to be 1:55 high - 1:56 to have any shot and they were way off that.
The people at beer mile media who were going to stream are no longer doing it.
A LetsRunner texted us from Chicago and he is going to try broadcast it live for us so we should have something for you to watch. If not, I know it also will be on Oregon instagram live.
Question. Which is more important to you? A close up shot of the runners but no or limited commentary.
Or a shot zoomed out but with commentating?
The software that allows remote commentating does not allow zoom on an iphone and there isn't proper time to get a proper video camera there.
LetsRun (just like Flotrack) did a great job stealing rights from this coverage per usual even though someone else purchased legitimate rights. The legit video is uploaded here:
Cooper and Cole come up just short of the American Record (3:50). Current AR holder, Bernard Lagat joins us on the mic and gives his thoughts post-race. This...
Guys don't you remember what Cooper Teardrop and Hole Cocker said after Millrose? They still haven't touched speed yet in training. This is just another rust buster. They couldn't go out in 28 because they hadn't run any 28s yet. Once they ran a few 29s in the first few laps, that instantly gave them the speedwork necessary to start running 28s in the later stages of the race. A few 28s and they had enough speedwork under their belt for the indoor season and were ready for a 26. But not a 25 yet because it's still just a rust buster American record attempt. Haven't touched speed yet. They're playing it smart and will stay off the track in base phase until the prelims at worlds in Eugene. They get at least a few more rust busters before then, but no speedwork. Experts on mile training like Keith Hoare know exactly what I'm talking about #goodforthesport

Can you cite a regulation allowing a sporting event to enforce an exclusive license for internet streaming? Not TV or radio. I don't believe the FCC or any other regulator would. A website might voluntarily comply, but I don't think they have to. A camera holder at a sporting event holds copyright over what the camera captures, minus incidentally captured copyrighted images. Inherent in his exclusive right to distribute his material is the right to distribute it. Unless he has signed away that right to someone, the venue will need very solid legal reasons if it wants to restrict it. Legal precedent is already well established for the opposite - see NBA v Motorola. Beyond this, exclusive licensing for a dead sport is the surest way to keep it dead. How much money can anyone expect to make if viewing is so restricted?
