Because people cried and fought getting vaccinated and we are nice enough not to fire them, so this is the next best thing to protect dumb boomer staff at these places.
Not tell me what any of these idiot anti-mask, anti-social distance, anti-vaccine people did to help stop the pandemic? They did the exact opposite and spread the virus like wildfire, while they and their ignorant friends and family died.
Unfortunately, the libs boxed themselves into a corner. They can't take off their masks now, because they'll be admitting Desantis was right. So now they have to keep wearing them forever to own the cons.
False. Liberals, after saving hundreds of thousands through more deadly variants and saving many in a less deadly variant, see that herd immunity, or rather, normality with a less deadly variant arrives, and drop mask mandates once that happens, which is not quite here.
Florida also had an older population when its COVID death rate was much closer to California's. What changed is that Death Santa did everything he could to spread the virus throughout the state and tens of thousands died in August-September and December-January. Florida's older population, though, accounts for the fact that its overall vaccination rate is relatively close to California's, because the elderly have very high vaccination rates. Florida also has a fatter population by far. But banning mask mandates everywhere and discouraging testing by abandoning testing sites, etc. means there's blood on Death Santa's hands.
Not cherry-picking. Florida had mask mandates banned and deaths, not merely cases, skyrocketed. 19,000 died in two months last summer, about 50% of the total COVID deaths prior to August 2021. And this variant may have a lower death rate but the enormous # of cases has made up for that to the level of an entire month of 2500-2600 deaths per day now. That's about 75,000 COVID deaths in the past month.

No they didn't. Florida, again is just in the middle of the pack. About 200 per day at peak Omicron in a state full of 80+ year-olds packed into elderly homes and neighborhoods. Stop believing nonsense and start living again.

Forget about Omicron, Florida got absolutely hammered with Delta. On 9/20/21, FL had a 7 day average of 445 deaths per day.
For comparison's sake, on the same day, NY's 7 day average was 33. NY's got a lot of old people, too, and is pretty densely populated. The peak 7 day average in NY since the vaccines were available was 211, on 1/19/22.
It's amazing, and says something about Desantis' incompetence, that FL had so many deaths after the vaccines were available.
Comparing US vs Japan is striking. Lots of folks wear masks in Japan. They don't have people saying and people subscribing to the idea that wearing masks is hell.
And Japan is an older population nation.
Active Infections per 100,000 - Japan - 703 vs US 8829
Deaths per 100,0000 - Japan 16, US 289

NY has an average D/million of ~3400, while Florida is 3100; what is the point other than different states got hit worse at different times. Are you trying to say masks work and NY is proof? How about everyone that was going to die in NY had already? The masking did nothing and there is nothing but anecdotal cherry picked evidence that says otherwise.

Japan has been one of the least restrictive nations throughout the entire pandemic:
I know it’s cliche to say but the answer is politics.
Masks started as a policy to restrict the spread of COVID, especially pre vaccine. It has now become a largely political symbol. If someone is wearing a mask outdoors or in their car alone you can probably safely assume they didn’t vote for Trump and are even firmly Democrat- this should say something about symbolism already. The colleges and universities doubling down on mask mandates or vaccine mandates are mostly going to be your stereotypical more “liberal” university.
Once masking and vaccines shed their political dimension we can all get back to normal. Two years into this thing, the onset of Omicron and with widely available vaccines it’s obvious all of this is just political theatre. The pro-mask mandate/vaccine mandate crowd doesn’t want to “give in” after two years of arguing by lifting all these mandates and restrictions because it’ll somehow appear the other side was correct all along or that they lost- which isn’t true BTW.
