This is the MILLION dollar question. I have heard of this else where too, and it is a blatant breaking of the rules. It also is nervous time for the lesser programs and those without huge NIL collectives because it allows for more scholarships. News flash, it is a slippery slope too, programs are breaking the rules, and the only way to adhere to the rules is to not demand that NIL money be used by the SA to pay tuition. A SA could decide to keep the money, report that they were promised the money to fund their schooling, thus putting the program in a precarious position. We are in crazy times for sure. And this is all before we venture into the Title IX implications.
This. Additional info heard was it would be funded equivalent to 6 full scholarships. Question is: since technically (and I think we know that this isn’t how it’s actually working - especially with football/basketball) you aren’t allowed to use NIL $ to entice a PSA to a certain institution - how do you recruit someone in this model? There’s no institutional aid that you’re receiving so you wouldn’t sign an NLI or grant-in-aid. Are you signing a contact with whoever is funding this? But the mail issue remains: if you’re really going to follow the rules and not use NIL to entice recruitment to an institution how does this not run afoul of current NCAA rules? Unless UT is hoping (or possibly knows) changes are coming and the NCAA washes it’s hands of all of this and say leaves it up to individual conferences? Lots of questions surrounding this but on it’s face with current rules I’m not sure how this doesn’t get questioned by a number of other coaches/programs.

If the LLC does the negotiating I don’t think there is any issue. Your contract is with an outside entity not the University.
Release makes it look like Carlson was hired by will report to the AD, not Ross. It sounds like they’ve almost separated distance from the track coach. That could be an interesting power struggle brewing right there. What do the talking heads have to say about this?
A disaster waiting to happen. The AD hires Ross and then hires Carlson as Director of Distance and Cross-Country, but lets Ross pick the rest of the staff. SMH....Danny White is clueless.

Ross doesn't care at all about xc so he's basically getting an upper tier distance coach with no scholarship loss ( if the nil thing is correct) and doesn't have to worry about distance admin. It's a great deal for him
Auburn? Oregon really open? UCLA had another horrible showing? Clemson?? South Carolina? These are major programs that go to ncaa and scored 0-5 points at best..

Except for the distance assistant position I’m certain Carlson will have the say in hiring that person. I would bet he will have more than one assistant with one being paid and the other a volunteer/GA

Yeah until Carlson doesn't run his distance folks at SEC, Regional or Nationals. Or they get hurt.

He will have 2 non coaching positions. A director of operations and a recruiting coordinator. All the coaching position go to Ross

Why in the world would you need a director of operations exclusively for cross country, along with a recruiting coordinator? Why do you need someone to coordinate the recruitment of literally 3 events. Carlson can't do that himself? SMH. They are just making up s*** at Tennessee.
Higher pay, more resources, better weather, better facilities... what's the downside?
As stated before, significantly harder to recruit to. A degree from Notre Dame sets you up for success. A degree from Tennessee? Well it’s a mid-level SEC institution. Better facilities? Have you seen Notre Dame’s indoor facility? Tennessee has no such thing. You also have the batsh¡t alums at Tennessee to deal with. I heard they were griping over Tennessee’s 3rd place finish at NCAAs. The expectations from that fanbase are unrivaled in college sport. Also, nobody has mentioned that he is a MENS coach. UT’s distance women were good this last year.

Recruiting takes a lot more planning, effort, time than you think it does and if you want to bring in elite talent you need the help to reach everybody so you're free to do your thing.

In case you missed the memo, Tennessee is in the process of breaking ground for a new indoor facility that won’t be shared with football unlike ND.
So what if he’s a “men’s coach”? If he’s worth his salt, he shouldn’t have an issue coaching women.
Notre Dame built a new indoor football facility. Notre Dame track shares their indoor facility with men's and women's soccer, men's and women's lacrosse, baseball and softball.
