When your defense is to point out all the other athletes that are mistreated that really tells you all you need to know. I can see the recruiting slogan now “Run for Oregon because it could be worse!”
exactly.
Like this isn't the defense you think it is. These are athletes, not marines.
It's okay to cultivate a nurturing environment, and oftentimes that leads to success. Toughness is one thing, telling someone nonsensically that they can travel with the team if they aren't at 12% body fat is another.
Nearly every professional athlete (you know--the ones at the top of the sport?) has talked about how they need to "go where they are happy". They consider emotional well being instrumental to success. I don't get why on earth it's difficult to understand, that other athletes might need it too.
Toughness is also defined differently for different people. For those in power, it's defined by your ability to bully and berate others. Someone who is just a downright A***ole is considered "tough" but anyone can hurl insults and horrible abuses at people who don't have any power to stop them.
For those who don't have power toughness is defined their ability to stay quiet and take as much abuse on the chin without speaking up or "complaining". This enables the people who don't have power to remain silent while those who have it can continue to keep it with no accountability for their actions.
