I was in the shape of my life for Berlin today and totally blew it. I went through 5k bang on pace feeling good but happened to notice my HR was way up. I thought it may be a watch error as it didn’t match how I felt. I glanced down every k or so and sure enough it was only creeping higher. As we saw with the elites it was a very hot day out there after about a month of cool weather. I should’ve backed off. Instead I was toast at half way and dropped out shortly after. Destroyed psychologically and had absolutely no desire to shuffle in and end my season like that.
Now we’ve established I’m a complete idiot, what should I do next? I’m thinking about another marathon in November. Have people had similar experiences? Will I be able to forget about today and grind through another 6/7 week heavy training? Or should I throw in the towel and go again in the spring?
