My issue with Salazar is that he, himself, cheated during his competitive years. I was a fan of his, in the early-80s, and enjoyed watching bury himself every time out. But to learn he was on PEDs or whatever, that ruined my memories.
If you are a cheat, you should not be a coach, at least in this capacity. Simple. But I guess you can blame Nike for this, by and large.
I totally believe he cheated, but AFAIK, there's no concrete proof. In his biography he talks about prozac and even mentions it's "off-label" uses, but that wasn't a banned substance and still isn't. In one of the hearings he said he took testosterone for "some months" in 1991 I believe. Again, back to his biography, during this time he says he cleared it with the USADA (or whatever it was called back then) and had exemptions to take certain medications but he could not compete, HOWEVER, he totally fails to mention the testosterone in his book. It seems like the testosterone was likely a part of his exemption. He makes a point to talk about how he took prozac, how he was demonized for it, and how transparent and honest he is about it. It's beyond fishy that he didn't disclose the testosterone in his book. Then there's, you know, the entire Athletics West thing. He says "No one ever offered me PEDs", meanwhile, multiple people are on record saying "Yeah, AW taught athletes how to take steroids."
