Cabrera was intended to be a stopgap as well. The fact that he performed above expectations was nice but not expected to continue. He wanted too much money and years for a player of his numbers. If he had been a little less demanding, he would still be with the sox. He was far better he was than expectations, but not expected to be worth what he was asking
--------------------------------------------------------
Again, please answer the question, why do you care what Orlando Cabrera makes let alone anyone else in MLB? As I had stated earlier there are no small market teams in baseball, just cheap owners.
---------------------------------------------------------
Fault Theo for a lot of things but you can't fault him for not being psychic enough to know that Renteria was going to bomb.
---------------------------------------------------------
You're only arguing your side of view, it's your tunnel-mindedness that makes you appear an unintelligent baseball fan. If that's the case, then I guess you can't give credit to Epstein for getting rid of Nomar. He was capable of putting up .325 20-25HR's, but you would be the same person if it were Duquette that gave up Nomar and he ended up having a good year with the Cubs. Absolute hypocrisy!
----------------------------------------------------
Mientkiewicz was also a stop-gap player, just like Cabrera. The difference was that unlike Cabrera, he underperformed
-----------------------------------------------------
First Mientkiewicz was an average player for the Sox, then he underperformed, which is it? Make up your mind. But hey, it's not Theo's fault, he's not a mind reader. Heck, let's bring back Mark McGwire, he hit 70 HR's one year. What? He's batting .180 with 15 HR's this year? Oh, I see, not Theo's fault McGwire is underperforming even though he's approaching being "over the hill".

Yeah, you really have a deep insight into the game of baseball, Alex. Pay attention now, you'll learn something: Towards the end of each season -- in September -- the major league roster expands. Teams are allowed to have more players than previously. THAT is when the Red Sox picked up Roberts. They only got him then for pinch running ability. That's a LUXURY, Alex. One that they cannot afford when the permitted roster size shrinks back down at the beginning of the year. So they had to get rid of him.
------------------------------------------------------
And you weren't one of the ones bashing Lou Gorman when he made the Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell trade back in "86" now where you? So they ended up getting rid of all 3 players that they acquired for Nomar? You're insane! I don't know how anyone could justify such a stupid thing.
I also didn't see you bash Epstein for getting injury plagued Wade Miller. The hypocrites are the ones that talk about running on letsrun.com. Let's save the quality posts for the brighter baseball fans.
