First real 3 mile race of the season on Friday. As a guy who is aerobically fit with very little anaerobic training, is it wise to go out slower and pick it up throughout the race?
I've been thinking about this, because 2 weeks ago we did a 3 mile time trial and I ran a 45 second PR with a substantial negative split. This was off of basically only mileage and tempos. It makes sense to me based on my understanding of aerobic vs anaerobic running that for a guy like me, I should try to do this: start slower and then picking it up instead of going out crazy fast, going anaerobic very quickly, and dying because I'm going faster than my training has trained me for.
Thus, would I be playing to my strengths to go out slower and pick it up in the last mile? Or is my understanding of aerobic vs anaerobic training flawed? Any input appreciated.
