A few months ago I spent the weekend with a friend who is a sub-14 5K guy, and his roommate who is a sub-4 miler. As they are very good runners I expected them to live healthy lifestyles and avoid junk food, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. The whole weekend we were eating chocolate, sweets (candy) etc. and barely touched a fruit or vegetable. We were even going out drinking somewhat heavily in the evenings, something I didn't imagine sub-4 milers would do. 3 days after I left the sub-4 guy ran another mile race and improved his PB by .6 of a second despite his 'preparation' being eating terribly and drinking regularly.
Ever since that visit I've pretty much abandoned my diet, which used to be pretty healthy, and this past weekend I improved my 4-month old 5K PB by a fairly large margain, even breaking 15 for the first time in my life, despite eating far far worse than I was eating 4 months ago.
This whole experience has shown me that diet can't make much difference at all, it makes me realise that anyone short of olympic level shouldn't really care about their diet as the gains from it are so margainal. Training and genetics are what matter.
