I view it as a bad thing. Berensen has been largely correct, but even if he weren't he should be allowed to voice his opinions. I don't think it's healthy for democracy for a small handful of tech companies to decide what we can and can't discuss on the Internet.

I agree it goes against freedom of speech, Twitter is likely a private company still

Nope, it is public:

Miss information is a huge problem.
But hey, it's only the last bits and pieces of our democracy on the chopping block.

Um, no, they operate like a telecom. Can at&t verifzon ot sprint ban the content of your speech?
Anything contrary to the liberal narrative is automatically labeled "misinformation" regardless of whether it is true or not. When they can't control, the liberals or oppressors just hit the ban/censor button. Anyone else see the correlation regarding controlling flow of information to soviet communist Russia and nazi Germany? Yup.

You mean the info provided by the NY Times, CNN, and NBC....and Fauci and Jo Biden, or the information provide by their political opponents. Who is wrong and who is right? Where is this "misinfo" and why is it suddenly such a huge problem?

LOL the first amendment is about the government not restricting freedom of speech. It has nothing to do with companies.
My vote is hell yeah a company can kick someone off their platform for spreading disinformation. They can kick anyone off their platform for almost any reason. If you don't like it go to another social media platform.

who?
I think it's inevitable.
Without addressing the COVID response policy itself, the execution of the strategy has been based on the notion that if left to individuals to decide on their own, they will make disastrous decisions. Thus, we were told to accept as true ONLY what the CDC says. Instead of being told to "evaluate scientific findings and make your own judgement," we were (and are) told to "Follow THE science" as defined by the CDC. This may or may not be sound public policy; I'm not going to debate that.
Controlling the flow of information contrary to THE CDC science seems like a logical thing to do from that perspective.
I hope this doesn't sound kooky, but it all has a very religious feeling to me. It reminds me of the situation surrounding the Protestant Reformation. Originally there was one church (the CDC), run be an infallible guy who understands The Word of God (THE science), and is, therefore, the only one capable of knowing what to do. The believers must believe because the Word of God is too hard for them to understand (because Bibles were in Latin and THE science is just too complicated) . The believers often believe very fervently. Some, however, learn Latin and have different interpretations of The Word of Science. Persecution and mayhem ensue.
You gotta admit there's a whole lotta religious zeal on our COVID threads here, from all sides, each convinced that they have THE truth that will save our everlasting souls (or, in this case, our bodies, the bodies of our trophy wives, and/or the bodies of our moms from whose basements we all evangelize).
Go in peace, peeps.
not a fan of Berenson but even less of a fan of censorship by private companies. social media should be regulated as a public utility, paid for by tax dollars, on the condition that nobody can be banned unless ordered to by a court for breaking a law.

The people who are chopping away at democracy are the ones who savor misinformation and cherish any lie that suits their biases. That has been the essence of the pandemic, with this guy and countless others like him. They know they have an audience who will consume any and all crap.
Again, it was never necessary to know a damn thing. I can't believe anyone looked at one statistic. Generalities overwhelm specifics. If it was immediately being compared to 1920 then it would be dramatically worse than estimated. Nate Silver was fooled to the point he was downplaying in early stage, because he was absorbing numbers instead of relying on big picture logic. Many of us scolded him on that on his twitter feed.
Absolutely this ban is a good thing. How can it be debated? One side of the aisle is so out of touch with reality that it actually devoted to a moron who called the pandemic a hoax, who claimed 38 different times that Covid-19 was disappearing or about to disappear.
This is a pure numbers game, just like track and field. Deceitful cannot be tolerated given world record quantities of delusional. If fewer right wingers weren't so remarkably stupid and gullible, the misinformation would be laughed at and all but ignored.

You?
similar to how we can't post about alan webb
Is it considered spreading “misinformation” when the CDC buries its own data showing masks in schools do nothing? And then, when called out on it, the media is largely silent (besides NYMag)?
