I love how he always goes hard from the gun in every race, he is very entertaining. I hope he wins big one day.

Agreed, Minus Stewy that mile would have been won in 3:49 in my estimation. Jakob didn't appear willing to roll with the pacer at first but when Stewy latched onto Nowak, Jacob knew he had to follow. Either way, Stewy is impressive and always comes to play. Now he just needs to work on his start ;v)
Definitely one of my favorite runners. Has some of fastest all time 1500 and 3000 times.
I wanna run like Stewy!
He's the Prefontaine of Australia! Great runner and isn't afraid to put it all on the line from the gun!
I also love the Ozzy, but I really wish he had a better kick. In order to be a factor he has to push the pace from the beginning, which he did tonight, and also tried to do in Tokyo. Ot didn't work in Tokyo because everyone else was willing to go out fast too, which meant that their kicks won in the end.
If he could could develop a bit more sprinting power and be able to hang with the big boys at the end, I think he will be fantastic. He obviously has speed, and kind of reminds me of Mu, in that she is successful by pushing the pace from a long way out, ratcheting it up to the point that others can't hang with her. I haven't actually seen her sprint, so I don't know what her top end speed in the last 100 would be.
Does he get some money for being an elite pacesetter?
Right now he is like Jakob's personal pacer, just when Tim abdicated the position!
That's what you gotta love about this new generation of milers. They go out there and run. None of that lame """"tactical"""" nonsense.

It is likely to make Engles retire, instead of upping his training level.

Yes! He needs to train for something new. Maybe changing pace? Possibly pushing from 800 out at a pace that stresses Jakob? Something he is ready for that Jakob may not.
Jakob is an exceptional talent so none of the choices are sound and easy. However, right now all he can seem to do is be a pacer if he takes the front and runs even pace. That is a sure way to be a doormat unless you are FAR better than your opponents.
Disclaimer: "Doormat" is inappropriate. Being the best in the world is what I am actually referring to.

What does Ozzy Osbourne have to do with this? He’s a Brit. We’re talking about the Aussie, Stewart McSweyn.

Regrettable. But if youre only sticking around in the hopes that everyone will make the mistake of running slow and giving you a chance, you dont deserve to win.
In this new era of honest milers the cream will rise to the top, as they should.

Racing is about getting to the finish line first.
If the field is fairly equal in talent, a championship race, the only sure thing sure is that a leader pushing the early pace will not win and usually not medal. Championship 1500m races will be """"tactical""" 99% of the time.
Racing is about honor. if you run from the front, you have it and you will receive it.
if you run from the back, you are a pvssy.

💯💯🤣💯😎😎
Jogging 3 laps then sprinting last lap 😴😴
Running 1500m 👏👏😍
Respect for Tim, Jakob, and Stewie. They made the 1500 stop being the clownshow that it used to be.
Great runner this guy from Tasmania. Not afraid at all. But they should stop this mile nonsense. Looking forward to see him succeed in a 5000 run one day.

Winning is honor.
I'm sure those able to win see someone leading to get their moment of attention before being spit out the back as an annoyance and a pvssy.
You come across as someone who has never raced at a high level. It also seems you have tried to lead without getting away and are frustrated that you get overtaken late in a race. And even if my assumptions are true, there is nothing wrong with that.......except leading, running from the front, or any other fabricated "honor" is null. Getting to the finish line first without cheating is the essence of t&f racing.

Okay thanks for your opinion. But as someone who has raced at a high level, and I can almost guarantee higher than you, athletes like McSweyn are certainly revered for their fearlessness. Racing at this level is not easy, it is daunting and in a way scary, and it's easy to not want to put yourself out there for others to take shots at. Honor isn't maybe the exact right word, but the essence/narrative of their being a certain reverence for guys like McSweyn is absolutely there and is recognized by his contemporaries.
Totally agree. I hope he gets a big win one day. He's a big reason so many people in this era have such strong PBs. I know he's going to get caught every time, but I still admire his dedication to making each race difficult. No one is running 3:50 for the win while McSweyn is in the race
Good interview by Engels. I appreciate someone who thinks along big picture terms and is not in denial. The American system rewards that sit and kick style all the way up the ladder. I can see why so many adopt it. Not many top notch frontrunners in high school or college, so the ones who do use that style are easily gobbled up. Likewise the fans are overly enamored by finishing tactic. A victorious frontrunner receives moderate applause while the late closer is greeted like a hero.
It lends to a very poor grasp of what awaits on the international scene, where you simply cannot cede ground and linger well back. I've seen it all my life, the American champion who takes his typical spot near the back and somehow expects the world to collapse in front of him just like the kid from Iowa collapsed in front of him. Bewildered expressions when it's not unfolding that way. Almost a sense of...hey this isn't fair.
Contrast to nations like Kenya, where they learn to run fast toward the front. Numbers game. Not all will fully pan out. The next wave will feature more of the same.
