And Harrison was right there also with his 413. There are always people that make big jumps or regress and we can't predict that. But generally good runners are good pretty early on. Not sure how many kids who didn't break 5 as a freshmen run sub 410 as seniors. I am sure there are some but improvement like that is rare even with puberty.
first i think his older brother runs at Georgetown now so I think as long as he keeps this up he’ll be fine. Also as long as you don’t fall off the face of the earth by the time you’re a senior, i think its worth some hype. Its extremely hard to be the best runner in your class for 4 years straight Aidan Puffer is going to NAU. He’s still a top senior in the country. He’s done a great job of maintaining his running while getting faster as well even with late bloomers coming up
What about the kid from North Jersey who has broken the national freshman record in the discus several times this season (well over 190')? He's 16 (and will be 17 in September). Do his throws not count for the record?
Really? You said you can't predict. I am telling you with 99.9% accuracy that I can tell you a 4:09 kid will be faster than a 4:38 kudos who is 2 years younger.
Same I can't wait for this guy to update us on his son. Sub 4:30 would be adequate and impressive enough for progression, but this kid better break 4 before he graduates of daddy was wrong.
My kid had a major growth spurt after running 4:19 1500m/4:38 1600m/9:18 3000m as a 13 year old.
Opened his track season last weekend with a 9:09 3000m. Closed in 64 so he's got plenty of time to drop. Probably will run 8:55 or under for 3000m this season.
Running mile on 5/20 in NYC. We'll see what he drops.
Will be at RunningLane Track in both 3200m and mile at end of month.
sub 4:30 would be awesome in that mile opener. hope he hits it. speaking as a sub 4:30 14yr old, he's just gotta hang onto the pack and be prepared for some vicious kicking. keep us posted then, i'll be watching results
But IIRC Sahlman had slower times in middle school than either his brother Aaron or the Young twins. He must have gone through a growth spurt as a freshman, as evidenced by his 4:16 mile. Someone who runs a nine minute mile in the 8th grade as compared with a five minute miler will probably never surpass the faster kid. However, if someone ran 4:40 and another ran 5:00 in the 8th grade it's not certain that the 4:40 kid will turn out faster. He might, or he might not. Physical maturation rates play a big part in this, but there are other factors as well. I
Sahlman was on top National class lists as a freshman and had run a 1:57 800 and I think a 55 400. The lists don’t terribly shift as the four years go on except for a very few. Just because you are still not #1 doesn’t mean your are not a National class runner so don’t quite get the Puffer comparison who is going to arguably the best xc program in the country…
I wish your kid luck. He will probably be in the mid-4:20s this year, if not better. But don't worry about the class or age group competition or winning the Internets. Just work on long-term healthy development where he peaks in college or later.
Well that middle schooler just ran 4:09. Sister ran sub 16:00. Brother is at Georgetown and ran under 8:20 in high school.
you are dumb
Over 10s faster than the second fastest freshman this year.
Here we go again. What’s the freshman record?
…also how is that 4:38 kid doing?
A freshman from WA (Bishop Blanchet's Vincent Recupero) went 4:11.80/1600m last weekend... And Owen Powell from Mercer Island WA went 4:18.55/1600m. Powell has some noteworthy parents in the sport.

Here's your update...

Doesn't turn 15 until July.
Appreciate the haters. It just fuels the fire.
"It just fuels the fire". Jeeze man, living through your child, much? Hopefully you give him space and let him enjoy HIS high school running.

How do you afford to live on Mercer island with a coaching salary (even two coaching salaries)!?
