Kara said that drifting out to lane 4 was a little excessive but it was hot and he was tired and he might not have known what he was doing.
So there. It's settled. Kara has spoken.

If this was any of your golden boy white runners you would all be applauding the grit and tactics.
Chelimo won - get over it.
Bingo
The usual suspects always come in with the hate. The takes get more embarrasing every page.

huh weird how this bizarre mistake only ever happens on the final stretch
fact is, centro lost with honor by staying in lane one. If Centro had cut off Hocker, centro would likely have won.
compare that to how
Chelimo won with shame by basically cheating.
Both get to go to the olympics.
you decide which model of sportsmanship is for you.
I'll go with Centro, every day and twice on sunday..
This may shock you, but many of us don't see positioning yourself to try to win races as unsportsmanlike.

I was actually thinking about this. With all of the heat Centro catches on this board combined with all of the Hocker fans, the scenario you presented of Centro beating Hocker in this manner might have caused the board to crash.

sportsmanship is on a spectrum
it's like pornography...you know it when you see it
deliberately moving across the track to obstruct other competitors seems across the line to me and I would never do it.
Win races by running faster, not by taking deliberate action to make others run slower.
You'll very very rarely see races finish in lane 4...which tells me that Chelimo was well beyond the bounds of normal track behavior.

I guess you frown on boxing people in as well. I like racing, which includes this thing called tactics. And I certainly don’t think positioning is unsportsmanlike.

that's sort of a fair comeback...but come on. You know that boxing in happens in every single track race. It's unavoidable and therefore acceptable behavior in track.
On the other hand, moving to lane 4 in the last 50 meters in order to obstruct...is not done and not appropriate. Lane 2...ok. Lane 4...no.
I suspect you can't name another race that was won by such an obvious obstruction, but you could name hundreds that had athletes boxed in.

"Each competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway in all races of two or more turns unless there is another competitor in his or her path."
End of discussion.

He ran directly to the place where he crossed the finish line in lane 4.

Your repeatedly stating your opinion that it is not appropriate to finish in lane 4 but that it's okay to finish in lane 2 won't convince me to agree.

nah he entered the final straightaway in lane one and didn't leave lane one for another c.20 meters.
I just re-watch this race from 2017. No there’s nobody drifts everybody’s just going in for the finish.
Drifting is not racing it’s Unsportsmanlike at best.

we're not in a court of law here. You can insist on these legal niceties... but we're talking sportsmanship. Which is largely determined by norms and typical behavior. Chelimo was out of those bounds. No one does what he did, and for good reason.
This is racing, guys. Chemilo had the race won. I wouldn't intentionally box someone in but I had coaches who taught me how to avoid getting boxed in. Staying out of trouble, sometimes involves running in lane 2. I think I finished an 800 meter run in lane 2 or 3 before. You have to move over if someone is running in front of you and you can beat them. Chemilo was a little boisterous but nobody was catching him. What I did not do was try to sneak by on the inside, which can cause major problems for you and your opponent.
Kenyans are known to approach running as like a game which involves play and tactics. They like to surge and then slow down and then surge again in a race. It is a race tactic that can break the field apart. He is a Kenyan who decided to run for the US. . Yeah, let's not be racist. He has his citizenship and lives in the US.
As for impeding runners, Athling Mu tangled with Nia Akins who fell down. It happened when Mu was cutting in to the front pack from her lane in the final. Unfortunately, Akins was moving up in the pack and she ran into Mu who was going for the lead. It was a miracle Mu stayed on her feet. She has good balance. It was not intentional from all appearances. Part of racing involves anticipating runners and what they will do. I don't understand why people are so mad at Chemilo. Did you see Hocker's legs after the 1,500? They were kind of bloody. He wasn't complaining about anyone spiking him.
Lane.four.
Lane four,
AND
Chelimo admitted he purposefully impeded his opponents.
Your citing a bunch of accidents is irrelevant to this case. Accidents happen.
Chelimo’s fade was not an accident.
Chelimo said clearly he meant to impede and he did so.
If I saw my son or daughter race like that I’d give the kid a massive talking too.
Where did Chelimo say this?
Personally think Chelimo looked like a clown out there waiving his fingers at guys when he's the one causing problems with his excessive back-kick. Would have liked to have seen one of those guys just push him off the track after that BS, or at the very least keep clipping his heels as a way of saying FU.
I don't think he should have been DQd going into lane 4 simply because the other guys didn't have the gas to pass him anyway. However, had he been DQd I can't imagine many of us would really be shocked.
