Sort of an interesting comparison:
I too ran Grandmas at age 38, but in 1995
I ran my very modest 2:47 PR at that race. My splits were almost dead even < 00:10 between 1/2s.
The bigger difference IMO is that I was 4:43 miler in my 20s versus Webb's 3:46.
Now at 64 1/2 my goal is to just get under 6:00 for mile!
Funny. I ran Grandma's in 1991 at age 33 and also ran 2:47. It wasn't a PR, and I didn't think it was a very fast course.
I never ran a mile flat out for time, but I doubt I ever could have broken 5:20.
Now at 63 my goal is to jog a mile without getting injured.
Ha! I also ran Grandma’s in 1995 at age 22. Also totally bonked. I recall it being a pretty hot day, especially for the second half. Probably started at 1:20 or so at the half and nearly 2:00 for the 2nd half. Totally cramped up and miserable. Walked most of the last 6 or 7km. Still my slowest time for a road thon ever. Didn’t enjoy that obvs but cool after party tho. At 48 now, still going strong, could maybe manage a 5:45 mile.
