Reading the results doesn't give you the whole story. Tergat also went the wrong way when he was up by a good amount and then was almost caught. But he did have someone to run with for most of the race. But he won by one second because of a bad mistake.

so will Geb!
You're right, he did a pretty good job! Besides, Khannouchi nor Tergat ran their best marathon in their second attempt! Tergat started with 2:08 and Khannouchi with 2:07, so there sure is some hope...
My point is that its not necessarily so, I appreciate your right to have an opinion, but I'm just pointing out that the last world record was set in a staged race with one star whom everybody else was working for.
I forgot the juvenile mentality on this board, please get back to swinging your nuts around, I'll look elsewhere for intelligent discussion.
Anyone entertained the thought that Gebrselassie simply isn’t a better marathon runner than his contemporaries - perhaps less so. It’s possible he just hasn’t a good marathon in his legs. Here is a runner that can run over a minute faster than Steve Jones over 10,000, but can’t run a minute faster over the marathon distance?
@herdsman
tadesse will not run marathon the coming 3 years. the time he runs it, he will lower it to 2:02-03

To summarize:
1. He ran the last 35+ minutes of the race alone.
2. A 2:06, PR and course record isn't a good marathon?
3. It was his second marathon ever.

Is this Bernard Barmasai the steeplechaser?
Yeah... someone pointed that out earlier. Former WR holder in the 3000mSC
AWW I am so sad... I wanted a new world record today. Today dammnit!
I understood he was going for the world record in this race? I also understood that he’d learnt from his mistakes in his only previous senior marathon. That was in London in 2002, when he finished third in 2hr 6min 35sec in a race that resulted in a world record of 2:05.38 for Khalid Khannouchi. Gebrselassie supposedly consumed only water instead of taking carbohydrate and glucose drinks.
yeahit took Tergat like 4 or 5 marathons (and no wins!) to get the WR and his first victory.
3. It was his second marathon ever.
WRONG!
it was his third.

That has definetly got to be one of the greatest solo performances of all time in the marathon. I agree with earlier posters: dont pay the rabbits.
I don't think so. Steve Jones ran 61mins for the first half of Chicago marathon with no pace makers and still hung on to win in 2.08 back in the 80's.
That too me is much more impressive than being carted through with 5-7 pace makers.
