That has definetly got to be one of the greatest solo performances of all time in the marathon. I agree with earlier posters: dont pay the rabbits.
that is what I thought. Tergat raced to the finish line when he set the world record. Geb needs at least 35k (maybe even 40k) to really threaten the record.

wr42kattempt - keep watching, you may learn something about cadence and not what the upper body looks like
nice. thanks for the advice. very astute. as mentioned, he was dying, and did.
out kicked, watching Kastor last week is dying. You cannot compare the two. I admit that I so wanted him to get the record and hence the reason I tried to deflect the normal negative crap sprouting from a bunch of losers. If you indeed not a loser, then my apologies for hindering your progress.
With all due respect..... Not that many people can go through a half marathon in 62 and maintain that pace.....
All the jokers on LetsRun who were predicting 2.02's and 2.03's just prove they don't know what they are talking about.... Tergats recors is a tough one!
jscrant, if Geb broke the record today it would have been absolutely amazing, these useless pacesetters screwed the pace up before 25k already. They were absolutely useless, Geb was toeing the pace long before he should have done so. This was very much a solo run.[/quote]
what was his split at the half?
apologies to any if I ruffled their feathers, I truly wanted Geb to do well. I do not believe that he actually died as much as otehrs were making out. At one time it looked as though the pursuers were closing rapidly and if he was dying why didn't they catch him. The pace was screwed up well before then. When the splits come out we can compare. For him to be truly dying he would have dropped to well over 3.10 per K. In the marathon, if you die you die, there is no coming back. Kastor died last week and won by less than 10 seconds. If Geb died in the same manner would he still have won by 2 minutes, lets be realistic. He didn't get the World Record but it was a damn fine attempt and hopefully more to come.
I got the 3K to go split (1:56:17) and he finished 10:02 minutes later.
I think that's pretty much jogging for him!

Die hard if that is in fact so, then I can only apologise for wanting him to do well. If you add the 200m onto 42k, it still isn't over over 3.10 per K for the last 3.2K
Great race, where does that place him on the list 5th fastest man (not time)
I had no idea that 3K to go, means 3.2K to go but - whatever.
I think Geb had a fantastic run. Fastest of this year and PB. I'm sure we will see him tomorrow all smiles as always. As said, we'll just wonder "what if", what if he had pacemakers helping him more, or even just one to race him on.
Still, (as rediculous as the live feed was) it was a festival for marathoners.
Tergat was right, if at all Haile can only scratch some seconds off the current WR and 3h runs don't seem to work that great.2:06 for someone in 59:00 half shape indicate poor marathon specific preparation.
goood call hoggie! the realy question is, why isnt one of the greatest distance runners of all time paying you to be his coach? think about he good he would have run the marathon today with you at the helm!
So who won MAYEROFF's prize?
the dude who predicted 2.06.18
Half-Marathon PB(here converted from the 10m)x2 + 8min isn't good for an elite runner, no matter how much you compensate your inferiority complex with sarcasm here.
1. Haile Gebreselassie ETH 2.06.20 (PB) (CR) previous CR 2.06.23 Robert Cheboror 2004

Think the weather definitely played a part....the wheels seem to have come off competitors throughout the field.... Considering how many competitors went through the half in sub 64, only 3 came home in under 2.10.
Geb's going to have to re-think his racing strategy if he wants to run low 2.04's.... He's unlikely to find quality pacers who could push him beyond 30k at that rate (They'd probably need to be 2.06 marathoners themselves!)..... Would suggest the record would have to come in a race with a high quality field.... Maybe Geb vs. Tergat vs. Rutto vs. Wanjiru vs. Lel vs. Tadesse .....Berlin 2006!
Would suggest the record would have to come in a race with a high quality field....I don't see why, that's not how Tergat did it. In fact Tergat said after London that he specifically felt that having too many "stars" in the race was counter productive (although that may just have been sour grapes after KK spanked them both.)
why does Geb have to change anything? it seems like a ton of people are now making him out to be a failure and never able of getting the record. i think he's fine, just look how frickin' perfect Tergat's record was - great weather, and a guy who tugged him the WHOLE WAY, remember Tergat won by less than a second, Geb was on his own and ended up winning by 2.5min!
Trojan....somebody further back quoted his HM split at 1:02:01. Nobody argued that...I assume it was correct.
what the man said:
"The last five kilometres I was not pushing. I need more training," .. "I am not so happy."
