Does anyone have the insight behind why she is leaving? Is new HC Shawn Wilbourn trying to flout his power? Seemed like only positive things people had to say about her.

From what I can tell she never even qualified anyone for NCAA's at Duke in track. Not even close to producing an All-American.
They only made it to NCAA's in XC this year due to the selection committee, they would not have qualified in a normal year.
Where is the Vandy rumor coming from
I don't know anything about Wilbourn and Riley and what their relationship may have been, but wonder if there were a few problems here and there. Riley was named interim Cross Country coach for both Men's and Women's teams last year, but when Wilbourn was named Director of T & F and Cross Country Riley was then given the title of Assistant Coach behind Wilbourn and another person who is called an Associate Head Coach. That seems as if it was almost something of a demotion.
Both teams made the NCAA meet and the men did pretty well with the 16th place finish. And both were in the top 5 at the ACC meet back in the fall, so I'd say she did a good job. In addition, I read positive comments from the runners regarding the culture and how they felt there was more team unity amongst both teams this year. Nothing more than a guess, but I bet she felt dissed and decided to move on. Duke has other coaches but none seem to know much about distance, so it looks like a step back for Cross Country at Duke.
She is taking over at Iowa State.
Good for her in getting the Iowa State job. Hey, maybe everything was fine at Duke and she just had a chance to further her career, IDK. Iowa State job just came open after a coach was let go it seems, so maybe they targeted her.
Iowa State women or all distance? Will she be coaching Kiptoo?

Straight from the Vandy website

I find this hard to believe ... so soon after opening? Source? Or just a guess?

Not true at all. They have a women head coach and now looking for a men's head coach. they have 3 on their list and she is not one of them.

No she was fired…wasn’t her choice. Conflict of personalities with Wilbourn. Seems hard for him to justify the decision to go with someone less experienced right after the team saw a lot of improvement this year.
Let's be honest she did a BAD job at Duke. Maybe she didn't have as many scholarships but she didn't produce a single All-American. Very few national qualifiers.
Their women won ACC's with 110 points. Only 9 came from distance.
Duke used to be better. They had a 10k national champion in 2011. Now they can't even qualify anyone to the national meet.
What were the conflicts with Shawn?

Precisely. Duke's women scored more points in the heptathlon than they did all of the middle/long distance events that Riley was coaching.
All coaches are entitled to form their own staff. Coach Wilbourn is justified in letting her go.
Issue is at Duke a lot of the scholarships go towards multis. And distance women did a pretty good job in indoor.
Doesn’t surprise me that Shawn has ousted all the coaches. He hated the Duke distance team and there was a lot of tension between him and the distance coaches who had been there longer than him over the past ten years. Norm had his faults, but I don’t think Shawn could stand him. Instead of bringing more distance runners to races Wilbourn would ensure we brought jumpers and vaulters who no heighted or 400m runners who couldn’t break 50 seconds (when distance guys were hitting sub 50 in repeats in practice). Wilbourn tried to run the program as a figure people were scared of versus the other coaches who had more of a true athlete/coach partnership attitude (Norm may have been too laid back but Shawn was the exact opposite). Won’t be donating to the team anymore after he’s the coach. And sounds like the team, especially women’s distance, is very angry at how things were handled with the announcement of Rhonda Riley leaving. The team atmosphere was pretty bad under Kevin Jermayn and Christine Engle (so as far that a lot of the girls formally complained about her to Nina King, the assistant AD at the time), so having a coach like Riley was a great change.
