It was a disappointing finish, but it bears noting a few things.
1. He did a lot more work than anyone else in the field with the pace maker not making it 2K
2. He still ran 12:54.69 even fading
3. He's got time to get sharper
He will not sleep well tonight, that is for sure. But a Bekele-esque hard run from far out will guarantee him gold, no one can hang if he shows up fit.
He was never going to medal in the 5k. Glad you were able to figure it out after his performance today.
He wont medal.
He can t run a 5000 time trial after a 10 000m final and a 5000m heat

It was a distance race, not a throwing event. You would no expect him to win at throwing as he is pretty thin.

Jakob and Gebrhiwet will. They are capable of 12:40 balls to the wall.

but that's what he has to do in order to win (lead at a fast pace) The others all have better kicks than him and both know it so they just need to sit on him. I could be wrong but don't think i've ever seen him go sub 55 in a last lap??
He should focus on the 10,000.

Jakob and Gebrhiwet will. They are capable of 12:40 balls to the wall.
Except Gebrihwet didn’t make the team. That’s how good the Ethiopians are.

You don't know that yet.

they go off time so I bet he is named to the 5,000m team
So Cheptegei has turned from a 12:35 runner into a 12;49 guy, and Ronald Musalaga has gone from a 3:30 to struggling to break 3:36.
Hmmmm...
Both very strange progressions.
Cheptegi took 7 seasons to go from 13:32 to 12:57 at 23, then runs 12:35 next year at 24
Musalaga had only broken 3:35 once (3:33.65) up until the age of 26, then runs 3:30 in 2019 and 3:31 twice.
Hmmmmm...
Gebrhiwet will make the Ethiopian 10,000 Olympic team after Barega drops back down to the 5,000 meters. The totality of Gebrhiwet's work this week should be good enough to put him on their 10,000 team. Their Trials aren't set in stone like ours are. I wouldn't be surprised if Edris is chosen to run the 5000. It's Ethiopia. They can change their mind, and they often do!

I think he'll be on team but i think Barega sticks with the 10,000m and he'll be named to 5,000m

If Gebrhiwet doesn’t make the team, it will only show that the selectors are idiots, not that the Ethiopians are that good. He’s easily their best 5k guy right now.

I would argue that their best bet to win a championship 5k is with Wale and not Gebrhiwet.

Why?
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
