I don't think he quit that goal. He was notified that he won a lottery ticket for the race, so he's focusing on that now.

Embracing the suck, that's for sure.

I would be interested in the other side of this bet for a friendly wager assuming that he starts the race.
Alright alright alright

Me too. I know little about the guy and don't care one way or the other, but I have some acquaintances who are nothing special athletically who finished Leadville, so I'd bet on him to finish if I got 3;1 odds.
Yup, 30hr is plenty of time if you pace yourself and don't go out fast. Has this guy ever done a race at altitude? I bet DNF if it's his first 100 AND at altitude.
I think he will finish.
He has enough money to assemble the right team around him who will show him exactly what he needs to do and has almost unlimited time to put in the training.
He uses these events on social media to promote his fitness products, very successfully too but I also think you cant take away that he is very dedicated to his training.
The "custom" marathon he did was also a bit of a cop out and strange how he would not let his friend Hunter take part and agree there was very little footage of the event on his you tube channel.

He will not finish.
I just watched a bunch of his videos. He seems to be a nice guy and very dedicated for what he does. I wish I had 10% of his muscles.
BUT he is not a runner and he is not an ultrarunner.
100 miles is a long way and Leadville is very very high. Flatlanders have finished Leadville but they all have been experienced ultrarunners.
Leadville 100 happens on August 21st. There are less than 3 month left. You can't transform a bodybuilder into a ultrarunner in that time. He has never done a trail 50 miler which would be the very minimum requirement for a successful Leadville finish.
He can be as dedicated as he wants and has the best team in the world, he will not finish. I am not saying that because I hate the guy. I am say this because I know Leadville 100 well enough.
He's not a body builder. He knows how to endure (Ranger school) and has shown the ability to plan, prepare, and execute training that leads to the accomplishment of a fitness goal (sub 5:00, kinds sub 3:00 marathon).
The distance and terrain I don't think will be an issue. He'll just walk a lot of it. 30 hour time limit is 18min miles. Like has been mentioned the altitude is going to wreck him.
My guess is he moves out to CO, does some trail running and some excursions at altitude. In a couple months he will know where he is at.
He will either DNS or he will finish.

You can run a lot and maintain muscle mass and strength if you're on HRT or anabolics. Without that your lower body strength and muscle size will be affected. How much it's affected is determined by the individual's experience and genetics.
Dude is on stuff. Probably not a full cycle anymore, but at least HRT.

18 minute miles look slow on paper. But even walking 100 miles at sea level in 30 hours is not easy.
I can't wait to look at the Leadville results on August 22nd.

With the amount of prep time he doesn't have I think it's 75% chance DNS. He's not gonna start unless he thinks he can finish.
He was running I think 70? miles a week during his marathon prep. And doing doubles!

Unless he goes to Leadville very soon, and spends some time on that course, and at altitude, he’s not gonna make it over Hope Pass the second time. I spent enough time at that race over the years, I’ve done the Hope Pass enough times and see what it does to people to know that despite being a “Army Ranger”, despite heaven some superhero ability to “embrace the suck“, to know that all of the fancy quotes and one-liners are gonna help him if he doesn’t make it back to Twin Lakes before it gets dark! (If and that’s a big if, he makes it back before dark, then he can walk the rest of the way in)
I’ll even give Nick a good work out to do if he goes to Leadville for training.
Go To the trail head of Mount Elbert, (near Halfmoon Campground) run/hike to the summit, turn around run back down. Stop refuel stretch and then run hike to the top of Mount Massive, turn around and run down.
If I remember correctly that somewhere around a total of 23 to 24 miles.
Simple.
Hope Pass the second time is always fun. Super steep and unrelenting. This is were the race gets real.
Exactly. I don’t understand why more people don’t talk about the fact that he’s clearly using steroids.

Does he?
Most runners don't use steroids, so they don't know anything about it.
The new hype in ultrarunning seems to be "micro dosing" LSD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja2-MDD3UqUHe'll finish within cutoff times but it'll be his first and last ultra high altitude ultra.
1. Big bodies don't climb well. Notice most of his races are mostly flat with the benefit of carbon plate shoes.
2. Big bodies from sea level == more oxygen needed to feed all them muscles.
he literally runs a company promoting supplements so is physique and accomplishments are a direct testament to his products (but lol at thinking that is all he takes...i would say he is on a large variety of PEDs). a lot of athletes have made comments on steroids that are similar to super shoes...it allows you to recover better and work out much harder. better and more consistent training leads to gains. i credited his durability earlier ITT and always wondered if steroids had a part to play there. i dont think his fans care one way or another and he isnt a pro athlete so who cares. it is funny when amateurs use PEDs, but as i mentioned...it is a business move for him so risk/benefit might make sense to him.
I agree he probably uses but when we don't know i feel like we should withhold speculation especially if not pro titles are involved.

In every thread about him everywhere, including this one, lots of people talk about it.
Different topic:
I think everyone doubting him is playing into his hands. He can do the old "no one believes in me" thing.
Like I've said a couple times, I know a guy who was heavier than Nick and had less of a running resume who finished just fine and went from sea level to Colorado just a day or two before the race. He was a 24 year old former football player who started running the year before and slimmed down from 250 to maybe 200 by Leadville.
I do believe Leadville is really really hard and many DNF, but wouldn't be shocked if a fit young guy can finish it.
