You have to remember that the whole team is broken down into sub groups, sometimes even within the same event. What you’re seeing is each group progressing at their own pace. The training is not the same across the board for all.
Niggles, injuries, races, and specific workouts all either contribute or take away from an athlete’s confidence. Jerry arranges all the chess pieces to optimize the former. His athletes implicitly believe in him; and he wholeheartedly believes in his athletes.
Interesting insight . . . their IG posts seem to confirm this.
Also of note is how each athlete has handled this intense altitude camp . . . Jerry has never had them at altitude longer than 7 weeks, now they are up to 8 weeks (as of Memorial Day) with several more to come, both before & after the Trials.
BTCers most definitely responders to this altitude camp are Shelby (presuming her 3:57 TT is not a ruse), Mo, Amos (missed a month due to injured foot then pr'd), Sean, Marc,Centro, Courtney, Elise, and GDS.
Not sure about Josh Thompson as he has been recovering from a hamstring injury from the TX Qualifier back in Feb. He shut down completely the last 30 meters the other night yet still just missed his pr by a second . . hope this was not because of another leg strain.
BTCers who are digging out from a big deficit include Gwen, Marielle, Emily, and Vanessa ("Team Sea Level") as Jerry has allowed them to ditch Park City for Portland to get their energy levels back up. Don't bag on them quite yet as they are all entered in the 5k @ Stumptown on Thursday.
Karissa appears not to have been training much the last couple months if you go by her Strava postings. Some of those weeks were down to about 10 miles. Given she's started wearing calf-high socks suggests she's been having lower-calf/achilles issues that have curtailed her training. If that's the case, then her 15-flat the other night is pretty impressive.
Most curious, tho, about Sinclaire Johnson -- most everyone's pick for the 3rd spot on the 1500 team up until a month ago. Since then, a sub-2/800 pr has been followed by 1500s in 4:12 & 4:06. As the women's team's rookie and youngest BTCer, this Park City camp has to have been pretty crushing at times. No injuries or illnesses, just (most likely) dead-legged, low-energy running.
Sinclaire is running the 800 on Thursday so she'll have been at sea level for about a week to give her a chance to get back to where she was.
