I’ll start by saying I’m a huge fan of Jerry Schumacher and BTC. I think he’s the top coach in the US and one of the best coaches in the world. However he seems to ride the fine line between massive training load vs athlete breakdown. At this moment it appears his methods may have bitten him in the tail because Jager, Houlihan and Schweitzer all appear to dinged up heading into the trials. Am I over-reacting or is this a real concern?
Overreaction. Schweizer is just now going into a mini sharpening phase. Jager already has the qualifier. He’s just playing it safe and training instead of racing. Houlihan just ran 3:57 on this weekend.
Jerry is a good coach, hard to say he is anything special.
What you can say is that he is handed the best in the US and as long as he doesn't screw up they will make him look good. No different than anybody else, given great athletes it is not very hard to have success.

And yes: mini taper. All 3 will be just fine.
His top 3 are Moh, Shelby and either Centro or Lopez.

Shelby will qualify but she is not okay.
Fraser is horrible right now.
Lemong is in trouble and that is why they kept Fisher and Kincaid away from him at Portland

He has auto Q based on world/olympic medals in past cycle. USATF rule 8 I believe.

Fraser is fine, but lacking her previous pre-surgery fitness. Shelby is fine. Stop worrying.
Lopez just coming off some hamstring issues. He’s old. It happens.

I don't think Schweizer is done for trials, but she is in real danger.
Schweizer just ran 15:00 and got outkicked by a 5/10/HM woman who has a 4:10 1500m PR. I think the lack of speed/change of pace was probably the most concerning thing about the last lap at Portland Track Festival. Hull, Seccafien, and Staehli all left her for dead. That could be a real problem come trials. She couldn't run the kick out of the three chasers, and she didn't have a kick to reply with. She will need one or the other, given Norris, Schneider, and Sisson are all looking comfortable at sub 15:00 pace.
You don't peak from 15:00 to sub 14:30 shape. With rest, recovery, and some sharpening you might find 10-15s in the 5000m. If she can do that, she might just be alright for making the team.

Thanks for this. It seems like opinions are mixed regarding this topic. Perhaps Jerry’s crew will be fine but this tune up / lead up for a number of his athletes is at least a little concerning.

Agree but is 2k of steeple pacing really enough to know that Jaeger is fine? Like I really want to see him win the trials but is he in that kind of shape? Will bor and mcgorty spit him to the back?
You have to remember that the whole team is broken down into sub groups, sometimes even within the same event. What you’re seeing is each group progressing at their own pace. The training is not the same across the board for all.
Niggles, injuries, races, and specific workouts all either contribute or take away from an athlete’s confidence. Jerry arranges all the chess pieces to optimize the former. His athletes implicitly believe in him; and he wholeheartedly believes in his athletes.
