And three Kenyans are competing. I can't really find the credentials of htem or the rest of the entrants but it sounds like the WR is a goal. Anyone know who is going for this?

Nice headline... What's the likelihood of three people without World Athletics profiles getting the 50k WR of someone who has consistently produced world class marathons throughout their career? Aren't you a running news website? Figure out if these folks are legit instead of speculating like this.

It's called "Crowdsourcing" and it is a great tool to have when you run a website that received many thousands if not millions of visits per day. It isn't really a very high profile story, so probably not worth his time to do a ton of research ahead of time.
Thanks being said, I have no info, but I'm curious if somebody else does.

Also, I agree with you. Hard to believe some folks with nearly zero creds could come close to Des's performance. She's world class, consistent, and seems well suited to the longer tougher stuff.
More likely Gerda Steyn decides to go the whole distance and breaks the record.
I mean just look at the ad-based tracking practices. It's clearly a site that's grown around the digital marketing and traffic-generation models.
Not 100% sure if these are the same runners
https://www.worldathletics.org/athletes/kenya/janeth-jepkosgei-busienei-14289031
Janet Cheruto has one HM time of 1:16:55
Naum Jepkosgei has one Marathon time of 3:24 but that was in Malaysia.
The race is called Nedbank 50km Ultra Marathon on May 23 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Not sure if this is a Covid version of the Bay ultra. Probably not.
Totally it's own event
Above has the entry list. . 99% sure no one would break the woman's record. I assume it was probably started for the Men's record and they figured they had to add a woman's field as well .
So what happened? Looked for the results but no success (story of my life)!

So the article referenced the Dixon WR, which they ended up breaking, and no mention of Linden's (which they did not). Some googling indicates Linden's WR was not ratified yet.
Wonder how that works with the monetary payouts in this case.
It’s a real shame Gerda didn’t race she is certainly capable of running 2:55 over 50km but is preparing for the Olympics so you can’t blame her. Des is well liked in South Africa everyone would love to see a Gerda v Des over the Two Oceans or comrades.
Except Des Linden 50k isn't a WR, it's only a world best.
Got to love the personalities on this site.
This is actually a bit of a Twitter discussion that Camille Herron and Des and I got into.
Apparently there is the "IAU" standard rules (which aren't necessarily the same as "World Athletics").
One point of contention was an "all women's race with no male pacers allowed".
Nedbank only referenced "IAU records" in their broadcast. Like they also didn't mention CJ Albertson's 2:42 on a track or Des's 2:59 performances.
Now Irvette is a heck of a runner and she ran a lot of that women's only race solo (for a 3:04), but I don't think it's nearly as good of a performance as Des's 2:59 (male pacers or not). Des says she has filed her paperwork and drug testing info and is still waiting on ratification.
Likewise for the Men (who had a pack going until the last 1km!), 2:42:07 is good, but the legend of Thompson Magawana's net uphill 2:43 en route 50km split while racing Two Oceans (and that 56km CR) is probably still a more impressive performance IMO.

What a mess that whole 50k thing is.
But you can't have it both ways Sage. Either the fast 50k time is the fastest 50k time. And not the slightly slower split at Two Oceans ( Which Sage thinks is more impressive)
You either recognize fastest records over a distance or you don't.
The "no male pacers" rule is in the Major IAU Competition (i.e. championships) guidelines.
Not applicable to Des Linden's 50k.

But Marathons have that "no male pacers" rule for quite some time.
Why should that be different in ultrarunning?
Again, I give credit to Des as having the 50km record. I know she was clean too so no worries on waiting for the PED test results. She crossed her t's and dotted her i's no doubt. I simply said Thompson Magawana's Two Oceans CR is a more impressive overall performance than the current 50km world record given that he basically split only 1-min slower at 50km on a net uphill route than what a pack of guys in carbon plated shoes did this past weekend for only 50km. Think outside the box for a second... Of course I give credit (and recognize) Ketema Negasa's 2:42:07 as the 50km record now. Again there was no mention of CJ Alberton's 2:42:30 either in the Nedbank broadcast as that wasn't considered "IAU" either apparently. I thought that was interesting also.

Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
