Hi all maybe this is a silly question, but I always see posts that say you should time trial and find out what kind of shape you are in, so you can tailor your workouts for your current fitness.
I think this is good advice, but my question is how would you go about doing this if you don't know what shape you are in? Do you go out hard or conservatively? *Note this is for 5K*
Let's say I believe I am in 17:30 shape for example. But really im in 18:00 shape. I go out at 17:30 pace and end up dying hard and running 18:30.
What if the reverse scenario? I think I am in 18 minute shape but I am really in 17:30 shape so I go out conservatively and then have way too much in the end and wonder what I could have run if I had gone harder?
I am guessing one would just factor in all these things and get a good approximation, and if that is the case, which scenario is better for approximating?
