My mother wouldn’t let me have one because she was convinced I’d be shot by the police. This kind of thing was not common then, except maybe as backstory in Die Hard. Also, we’re white.

My mom let me have a cap gun (like the one below), but she refused to let me have one that looked like a real gun. She too was worried about it being mistaken for a real gun. We are white.

That is a good question. They were just fun and those strips with a little bit of gun powder seemed like a walk on the wild side for a kid. My family didn't even own guns but we all had cap guns.
