Oh please, whereas a time from course to course doesn't neccesary mean ones better and beating so and so means more, a xc pr does have signficance, and you can definatly measure progress frlom one season to the next quite often unless hte improvement is so insigifant.
Also many times guys will run at the same meets each year...hence the same course. Which then makes it just as arbritrary as a track race because the weather and pace is the only other factors dictating the time, which you also have in track.
