Step one towards a cancellation. I've been saying since they were cancelled the next summer olympics will be 2024.

You mean you're shocked by this.
Was clear this was going to be the case months ago. Better than a full cancellation anyway.
It's good that it's being held in a country that'll still sell out though, not like Brazil was or the US would be.
Who cares?
Olympics should just go away.
Just cancel it and let Japan have 2032.

Cancelling foreign fans is a step towards holding the Games, not a step towards cancelling them in my book.
All fall I was saying that with Japan not having a lot of coronavirus that it actually might get in the way to hosting the Games. They're an island nation, they may not want a bunch of foreigners coming in. Whereas if the Olympics were in the US , depending on the state, a lot of them might encourage tourists at this point.
The number of foreign tourists would be much greater than the number of athletes. And athletes can be tested regularly etc.
Media might be next on the chopping block. I bought Jon Gault's ticket this week, but we don't have media hotels and the organizers haven't given us a way to book. The official bookings were done in 2019. We figured we'd do Airbnb like we did in Rio. But since this fall I've been emailing organizers and saying "hey we need a way to get an official hotel room." They have written me back essentially saying they'll figure something out later.
Yet, officially, athletes are allowed to compete without being vaccinated. They will be housed in the athletes village. Wouldn’t want to demand countries to vaccinate their athletes for fear of being labeled racist to those countries with lesser means to pay for and access vaccine.
What ever happened to the idea of a Covid passport?
Couldn’t foreign visitors, and Japanese residents, be asked to show that they were vaccinated? Let’s face it, foreign visitors have the means, heck to belly up for air fare, hotel, food, tickets, trinkets people that go to the games have the means to be vaccinated.
If you have been to sporting events in Asian countries that are sports not common to those countries - very few people go to watch. Think about what sports are important to the Japanese all the rest will be vacant except for school kids who are given free tickets.
Speaking of cost. The games are estimated to be twice over budget and now in excess of $30 billion. Ticket sales estimated at $800 mil to $1 billion are now gone. All but $6.7 billion of the costs are born by the Japanese tax payer. Hotels, restaurants etc. income is now gone. Sponsors and TV coverage costs aren’t getting what they paid for.
Are we going to have a situation where Japanese ticket holders will not show if there are no Japanese competitors? I remember this being the case at Worlds in Osaka in 2007. I also recall this being the case with Worlds in Doha in 2019 to the extent that the government stepped in and gave away free tickets in order to fill the stadium.
I can certainly understand the Japanese desire to safe guard their country. I wonder if scheduling will change in any way. It would be great if NBC, the broadcaster would show all races even qualifying rounds, but I suspect that will not happen.

And these are 5 people on here?
On a serious note, it is actually difficult to find some numbers on the web about this.
But T&F is not popping up in the top 10 for sure.

Obviously T&F isn't a main stream sport but you're the only person on LR that wants the Olympics to go away. The answer to your question is everyone but you.

How does a track fan say this? The olympics are the pinnacle of track and field. It’s the one time that the public is able to appreciate our sport. It’s literally the foundation and beginning roots of the sport.

I am not a track fan. I am a road runner honey.

no real surprise here-yeah to have a viable games no way they would have 100% capacity and fans from abroad coming into Japan-logistics would have been crazy requiring 2 week quarantines for all from countries with differing case counts and surges still happening in Europe; I'm sure a lot of people will be pissed but it is what it is, after a one year delay, I feel that athletes are willing to make it happen with the mandatory testing/quarantines and with 15% fan capacity with distancing, and limited media-sucks for you guys with uncertain capacity/bookings for media; At least with vaccination rates heading up, I am a lot more optimistic than 2 months ago that we will have an Olympics in some shape or form..

The modern Olympics have led to more far more harm than good to top level track and field. T&F still does not have an annual world championship, the most glaring result of over-emphasis on the Olympics.

Why? The TV coverage of T&F has sucked for the past several Olympics. They had more coverage of synchronized diving than T&F events.
Will be curious to see if Gault stays home devastated or not. I think he deserves to go the Olympics after being sent to the cancelled 2020 NCAA indoors (at extreme danger to himself).

I love T&F and hate the Olympics. No real sport looks at the Olympics as their "pinnacle". T&F needs to get away from that model and look at other sports that have their own annual spotlight event.
