Tragic death. He was a great guy. RIP.
Sponsored the Carolina Invite from 2011 to 2017.... give or take.
Taylor ran the steeple for UNC
He is still #5 on the all-time UNC list in the steeplechase.
1. Jimmy Cooper 8:34.47 1982
2. Matt Smith 8:46.96 1996
3. Eric Hichman 8:47.2 1990
4. Jack Morgan 8:48.6 1984
5. Kent Taylor 8:50.0 1973

Well if Taylor was 65 at his death he must have run that 8:50 early in college. Obviously he had some ability as a runner.
Off topic, but that SC list seemed weirdly skewed towards ancient history, so I looked up UNC's outdoor top 5 lists. Of the 30 marks in the 800, 1500, 5000, 10K, and SC, only 4 are from this century. 26 are before 2000. 20 are from the 1970s and 80s. I'm sure this will quickly change with new coaching staff, but is this the oldest performance list in Power 5?
Or academics
I think you'd be surprised how many colleges/universities T&F Records reflect the same history.
Can confirm this oddity to be true. Updated indoor lists from 2021 will show 2-sub 4:00 from Tubby and Ratcliffe and school record DMR (9:25 from NCAA's). Waldrop is still school record holder at 3:55 for mile. Imagine more outdoors records will fall.
