No way Aliphine isn't going unless she is flat-out injured. She will at least get to the starting line, even if it means DNF or running three hours.
Personally, I don't think she will be that bad but just sayin'.

Probably she'll go, but push a stroller for the race. try and get herself a niche record. Jordan you better look at that training log. If it comes anywhere near working.

Case for missed steaming opportunity is even bigger now with it going so well. Such a shame!

No one would ever go to the Olympic Marathon knowing that they were not healthy enough to run.....oh wait. Someone did just that in London dropping out before 5k.

Desiree will be up for some big surprises when she moves to the real ultras.
Really?? You think she'll be surprised that a 50 miler is a different kind of pursuit than a 50K? Don't you think she knows just a bit about exercise physiology?
I have no idea what Desiree knows about exercise physiology.
But I know what it takes to run 50 miler, 100k 100 miler and 24 hour races. It's quite a different story than a Marathon.[/quote]
Let it go man, why do you feel so threatened by Des destroying the 50k record on her first attempt? Oh wait, I know because it feeds into the narrative that any top class marathoner could destroy the tier 3 runners who become the top ultra-runners because they were just too slow to be competitive in running events. Who cares. But now suddenly you are willing to sell out the "all inclusive feel good mantra" which is the basis of ultra-running (inclusive) - which always states that anything over a marathon distance is an ultra - by saying that a 50K isn't a "real" ultra-marathon because you feel threatened. Take your micro penis and join cross fit with that attitude - actual ultra-runners are very happy with Des's success and very much hope that she does a lot more of this. Would love to see her do some trail running. I bet she does awesome.
Desi is EXACTLY the type of elite marathoner can (and did) move up to the ultra and have huge success. She was always considered a grinder over a speedster, even though she has plenty of skins on the wall in that department too.
Congrats to her, couldn't happen to a better person and better ambassador for the sport.
Dk why this thread, like so many on here, got so negative.
Instead of saying Des will/won't excel at distances above 50k, can't we just be excited by the prospect of finding out how someone with her pedigree will do if she tries something longer?
It was great to see someone not completely done professionally go to the ultra scene. Feel like you have ultra runners and retired pros but people in elite road shape rarely give it a go. Des came through in 2:31. She could have run in the 2:20s & (probably) finished top-10 at a major yesterday morning. That's pretty cool.
I would love to see Des run the Comrades and give some competition to Gerda Steyn, it would be an awesome match up as it’s a distance Des would excel at and she can match Gerda for marathon speed. It could be possible if Des fits it in between her spring (Boston)and fall marathon (NYC)
