Love that she's trying something different. GO DES
Remember after the marathon trials when she said that she was debating going back to the track? I laughed then and I laugh now.
It would be a great if another 5 or 6 runners were to show up and make it a race but they won’t because they are all running on the track. Oh how the once relevant struggle for relevancy near the end.

Even if Desi returned to the track, she wasn't going to contend for an Olympic spot.
This is a great goal for her.
Wish she’d race in Hamburg or something. Always seems to pick a major. Now she’s choosing a race no one knows or cares about? There’s plenty of non-major races. It doesn’t dilute your performance if you race in Europe or Asia.
Great news.
Finally a good female runner is taking a shot at 50k.

Aaaah, we still have to deal with Covid and Hamburg Marathon is postponed until September.

I was thinking of the NN race. There’s races happening and she has the $$$ to travel. Might as well ask for a sponsorship into a competitive field. Racing only Boston and Philly really cuts down on options.

She was never serious about running on the track as she would be exposed. It is easy to hide in NY and Boston because of the difficulty of the courses. This would not happen on a track. What is the fastest performance by Des since 2017 for ANY distance? FASTEST not where did she place well on a difficult course?
Her latest race was a 1:15 HM losing by 4 minutes to Makena Morley.
This is a great, it would be nice to see what more marathoners try a 50k or longer before they retire.
She wouldn't get into the NN marathon if she tried so that is silly to even discuss.

have you looked at her training leading into that half marathon? she wasn't exactly peaking for that one.

what in Gods name would cause someone to be a Des hater?
She came out of obscurity to become one of the countries top 'thoners, and just missed a spot in the trials.
How anyone could defend the last several posts iTT is beyond me

Please stop replying to yourself. It's embarrassing for you.
I think she'll do great! Would've been awesome to see her at Two Oceans (a little hard to get to S. Africa these days!). That can be a good payday. Outside of Comrades and Two Oceans (and then maybe Ultravasan etc) it's generally more "lucrative" to move straight to trail-mountain ultras. Desi might even be better on hilly courses/trails. With her strength and endurance (and relative marathon speed) there's no reason she couldn't run a great 50km (it basically runs like a marathon if on flat roads). So is this a "world best"? Is it considered an "all surface record"? Technically the guy that ran 2:43 split it as a net uphill in Two Oceans I think....and that was all road.

Which NOP ‘friends’ did she celebrate?

Absolutely......
Hope she does well
This is fun man.
Anyone who doesn't think so is a hater.
she is the type of runner who could run an exceptionally fast 50K since she seems to run her own race and closes very well when the chips are down. Her training for this probably wouldn't be very different at all than her normal buildup for a marathon. Entirely possible she gets a world record if its 6 :01 pace.
