really, NP kids are only running 55 miles per week? is this verified? hard to believe. At those talent levels, they are not even running an hour per day at that mileage.

This coach has the formula. Do less mileage to run faster.
looking into it, I am seeing that Nico was doing around 70 per week. Sounds more realistic. Not too much and not too little for somebody of that talent.

The magic one?
haha you looked into it? now I've heard everything
From what it seems he has freshman 30-40 sophomore 40-50 juniors 50-60 and seniors 60-70

where are you getting this from? Honestly
It's obvious that he's doing something special with his athletes. If those guys ran outstanding times already as freshmen, that doesn't diminish the coach's work, because he coached them as freshmen. The system begins to work very quickly. As for getting talented runners, well, that's also part of his work, as he works together with the junior highs or middle schools nearby to start developing the kids, as I recall. Moreover, where were all the talented kids before he starting coaching at Newbury Park. I recall that the team's results were not noticeable at all beforehand. He made that program. Now, he does have really long and hard workouts but he gets the kids to do them, a special talent right there, and he is able to keep them healthy enough to get big numbers. The kids do not appear to be plateauing in high school either. Jace has improved and Nico is now well above his level. You'd like to pretty much run your hs 5k xc pace over 8k xc by the end of college, and Nico's already doing that as a freshman.
Strava?
Jace was 68 like clock work last year. 63-65 for the top juniors last year who are now at 65-68 as seniors. Average pace for their runs is around 6:30-6:40 overall. They are VERY consistent with that mileage. There was around 25 weeks in a row at that mileage, plus or minus less than 2 miles.
Where do you recall that he works with the junior highs and middle schools. You do realize they are from communities outside of his district right? So, is he recruiting them from outside of his district before they are enrolled at his school?
You do realize that Nico and Jace were freshmen the first year he coached at Newbury Park? So how exactly would they have been recruited by an unknown coach to a school with absolutely no history of prior running success? Going forward with Newbury's success he won't need to recruit. Serious runners living in that school district entering HS will look to go to Newbury on their own just like they do with the other XC powerhouse schools in California.
I think you're right in the fact that he gets kids to run outstanding times as freshmen, but let's remember they are really good before they get there.
In regards to kids plateauing, Jace and Nico are special talents. They can make any coach look great. However, it seems that previous classes of their top runners didn't fair quite as well after high school.
Ethan Ronk was 12th at the state meet as a senior, 3 places ahead of Jace Aschbrenner as Newbury Park’s number 2 runner. Looks like he ran one race at Belmont University, which was a 4:40 mile. He is no longer listed on their roster.
Kyndall Long was the 2nd best senior in 2019, where he was 37th at the state meet in 15:52. He doesn’t appear to have run at all in college.
Nathaniel Garner was the top senior in 2018, ran 15:41 at Clovis and was usually the 2 or 3 runner. He went to Weber St and seems to have run one season of track where his highlight was a 4:37 mile. He doesn’t appear on their roster anymore.
Ethan Duffy was the top senior in 2017, where he was 24th at the state meet with a 15:47 and ran 9:18 3200 in track. Ran for Cal Poly one cross country season, where he ran 24:44, but has since stopped and is no longer on a roster.
All of those kids had the ability to run in college according to their high school careers, yet none of them improved and all of them stopped running no more than one year after high school.
If you're going to give him credit for the success of Jace and Nico, you should give him the blame for the kids above.

They didn't go to Newbury Park for running. They went because Newbury Park is a much better academic school than the school in their area. Both Aschbrenner and Young were top students.
Young couldn't get into Stanford.
No way.
He didn't start HS with these guys. Some them he only coached one year. His first class was Jace and Nico's class (NXN Champs). His first year coaching was with them, not these other guys. You blame him for the old coaches carnage. Everyone he developed from his first year have been great. He was able to take a nothing team and turn them into California State Champs over night and develop all his freshman to their senior year. Thats called a great coach and program. He must be doing a heck of a job with haters and trolls like you.
He develops runners and a program. You should try learning and coaching better instead of turning your jealousy of something you wish you had. It's sad to see all these coaches cry instead of putting in the time they should with their teams and athletes.
Amen! The trolls love to hate on what they can’t do. Colin is a crazy athlete with hands down has one of the best , if not the best HS coach in the county right now. What they are doing at Newbury Park is so cool to watch.
I have met the Newbury Park coach at Arcadia in 2019 and we had a great conversation about training and development. I keep pushing my team as I have only had individuals go to NXN and hope to bring my team soon. After my 20min conversation I can feel the passion and dedication I have yet to see or hear from any other coach in HS.
Wait, zxcvzcxv says the system works immediately and he should get credit for the freshmen running so fast. So, does it take four years or can he make that big of an impact in one year? Which is it?
Who's crying? Just pointing out that maybe his coaching works really well for the super talented, but maybe not so much for everyone else.
Wasn’t he also a 9 x All-American?

He is obviously a very good coach. He can also be a huge douche and conspiracy theorist. Both things can be (and in my opinion, are) true.
I do think Mike Smith is the best coach in the world. He has taken the Wetmore model and improved upon it. Wetmore has evolved with the times pretty well, but I think sometimes it takes a new generation to really break out of the old ways. He will do great things with Nico and Rupp.
I love the haters. They have nothing to say so now they call him a douche and conspiracy theorist. It speaks a lot about yourself.
