NCAA DIII Kills the NAIA

Rankings are stupid. How can you rank teams against each other across the country. Complete asininity.

NAIA was killed (in xc/track) when Adams, Western, etc. jumped ship to DII. Back in the day, NAIA was better than DII in distance, but all the best NAIA schools joined DII around '92.

and D2 and D1, up top, kill D3...don't get this started.

I'm not starting anything, just pointing out that NAIA lost it's xc/distance luster when a bunch of schools changed membership to DII, including Adams and Western.

It's all relative, it's all not-that-important in the whole scheme of life whether is DI, DII, DIII, or NAIA.

rankings arent very stable for d2 and lower until towards the end of the season. everywhere, except for d1, you can see a non ranked team suddenly jump into the top 10. wait until the end of the year, then speak. all this crap about d3 not having money is exactly what i said, crap. i had terrible grades in high school but was offered a lot of "academic money" by a few d3 schools. the athletic department may not give out "scholarships" but money can be found.

Centre also beat alot of other schools, like belmont, Morehead St, Dayton, etc. They ran well... Give them Props. And lets see how things has out. They may end up being top 10.

Not to put up excuses but typically NAIA schools get comparably alot better at the end of the season (lack of depth).

Plus the NAIA champ got toasted by an also-ran this weekend.

How can you say he got toasted? He lost by like .2 secs and I bet this year Korir is top 40 DI. If 23:47 is an also ran, what does that make you're 17 min 5k?

I've always thought that the NAIA was better up front but lacked the depth of D-3 schools. I went to an NAIA school and always compared our nationals to other ones and found that to be the case a lot of the time.

That's very true. Its a lot easier to get ranked in the NAIA, but at the top the NAIA is just as good, if not better. Something to consider: NCAA D3 has 349 men's xc programs while the NAIA has 186 men's xc programs. Clearly D3 should have a lot more depth.

You also have to remember that although almost all NAIA schools can give scholarships, only a handful of them can give quality scholarships or full rides. Most of the NAIA schools have a cap on what they can give. Take for instance the 21,000 school I coach at, the best I can do for a stud is get it down to where he pays about 6,500 a year. So those NAIA schools in the middle and down in the bottom 25 of the NAIA rankings are doing most of there running with 16:30-17:30 hs 5k runners. There are exceptions. Lindenwood, Mo-Bap, VIC. Those schools give great scholarships, have lower academic standards, and use athletics to gain national exposure and not to drive enrollment. Just some thoughts and hard core facts!

i can almost say for a fact that LU, VIC and Mo Bap are all about the dollar... the dollar coming in the door. All private schools are businesses. Just because you see great results dont think its all because of money.
