Tragically Hip, Dartmouth Nova Scotia, 1987, a dingy bar, no-one in the place except for me gave a fook. They tried their best to find a pulse. I felt compelled to go backstage after the show to tell them how great they were and how the bar was full of losers. Mr Downy smiled.
My cousin hung out with Stain'd a lot in the mid 90s. He doesnt see how they made it big, says they were such a shitty local band in Massachusetts, but they were fun to hang out with.
that's cool :)
i don't know if i've seen any bands before they made it really "big." maybe the von bondies, if they qualify. most likely not though since they've reverted to playing $7 shows.
Meat Loaf
I went to see Public Image LTD and Big Audio Dynamite II in Balch Fieldhouse at CU-Boulder in 1992. Live and Blind Mellon were the opening acts who few had heard of or cared about. The singer from Live had a sore throat so the guitarist filled in on vocals. Of course he was the SECOND best guitarist to ever come from York, PA.
Louis XIV back when they were called "Convoy" and didn't wear makeup
Snoop Dogg and I used to hustle in the LBC
Nirvana. Amazing, the band that change rock forever.
Anybody who went to college in MA in the mid-90s saw Guster play in front of a dozen people. Maybe it was when they were still called "Gus."

R.E.M., when Murmur came out. Not surprised at all that they made it. I've seen them many times since, and that early show was one of the best.
Bare Naked Ladies
Went to visit two good friends (brothers) in South Pasadena I'd grown up with in Oakland. I was almost 15 in the summer of 1977. We'd just returned to their place from the beach and strolled across the street to see his "friends" jam in their garage. It was ear-splitting, amazing stuff. There was good reason for that. It was Van Halen and crew.

Lifehouse - not surprised at all. I raced out to buy their CD the next day myself. I'm only surprised they're not even bigger. Saw them in 2000 opening for Everclear and Matchbox 20.
Maroon 5 - not surprised at their success either. Thought immediately they sounded like a hit band, although I didn't think then and don't think now that they're actually adding much to the scene. The 3,000 screaming teenage girls who were there waiting for John Mayer (I was there mostly for Counting Crows) begged to differ.
Oh, and I recently saw a band called Blue Merle. Not big yet, but they will be. Haven't yet heard another US band sound so much like Coldplay and they have some pretty catchy material to boot.
