If you're "allowing" yourself drinks then obviously you want to drink more than that. How is that gonna work in the long term?
Better to find an amount that isn't too much, but is as much as you want.

I think you would be MUCH happier on cold turkey!

Does alcohol make you happy?
No. So why bother?
Just be an alcoholic you know you want to be one. Orders some hookies tonight too I know you have the money.
I hope you have a good 2021 Jamin!
I hope you realize that sobriety and alcoholism are not mutually exclusive.
This sounds like the kind of decision you could probably make for yourself without feeling the need to discuss it with the world.
The question is are you increasing your mileage to match your drinking or decreasing your drinking to match your mileage? Should we expect to see you running more ultras in the near future?
I predict that will drop to one every 5 miles...or less if you get injured.
Fifty miles and you'll be ready for one of these:
I think you might be an alcoholic
That doesn't sound bad. Just don't drive after drinking, figure out your transportation before you go out.
You went from 50 miles to 20 between the thread title and your initial post. Not good, brother. If you have to set goals for yourself like that to reward yourself with a drink, then you have a drinking problem.
Drinking should NOT be a regular activity. If you are regularly planning when to drink, then you have an issue that needs to be addressed.

He shared because for him it’s a big decision that is making him nervous, which he’s trying to rationalize, because he’s an alcoholic.
Many of the responders seem unaware that Jamin’s long been a self-proclaimed alcoholic. You must not have been paying close enough attention to the boards around 2012.
I’m an alcoholic.
Jamin - I think you know that total abstinence from booze is the smart thing to do. I wish you the best (and please stop posting all that “Covid-conspiracy” crap).

What we have here is a projecting 12-stepper
Do what you want or you'll have "problems" for life. Only you can decide what's a problem for you and what isn't.
You should run 300 miles next week a celebrate with a six pack.

INCORRECT! I've never been in a 12-step program of any kind, and I've never needed to be. I rarely drink alcohol, but I do once in a great while (I probably average 6 alcoholic drinks PER YEAR). I'm not against people who drink...even people who drink more than I do. I'm not even against people who have problems with drinking, unless they hurt others doing it. BUT, I will point out to them that they have issues with drinking, and if you are making plans for regular drinking, then you very likely have a problem. Also, you are incorrect that others can't see that another has a problem. It is very often others who see that someone has a problem. That's where interventions come from.
Let me know if you'd like to learn more.
This site feels like a religious revival with all the teetotalers speech on here. Y'all need to chill out a bit and not be so uptight. If the man wants to drink, then drink!
It's funny that Jamin's initial post that started this thread is now gone.
Anyways, I think Jamin should just enjoy a drink if he wants to and learn to get a grip on consuming alchohol.
I have never been into alchohol and therefor never had an issue with it.
Poster Jamin has indicated his struggles with the bottle at times and it seems to me it's a case of fear and self control. The fear may come from a fear of not being able to have self control, or not trusting oneself.
I wonder whether poster Jamin could run 5 -10 miles at 6 minute pace. I imagine he trusts himself that he could. I imagine there have been times in his life he's consumed alchohol with no issue.
I think it's a mind over matter thing.
As a reference I had a pretty bad gambling issue years ago and one may even argue I've had a gambling issue to this day.
I lost $80 American dollars this month playing poker, which may sound like peanuts to some of you but to me $80 is over $100 Canadian and that's a lot for me.
I however enjoy the game and will in all likelihood gamble again in the future, just not anymore this month.
I can gamble and enjoy it and cut myself off from gambling if I've lost enough to the point I feel really bad about it. If Jamin can have a few drinks and not feel bad about it, he's ok. When he starts feeling a compulsion to drink and regret the next day, it's an issue.
Or maybe I'm completely wrong and he needs to go cold turkey. My mindset is that life is meant to be enjoyed, so if you want to put a few back, do it and enjoy your life. Just don't let it get out of hand.
You are in life to enjoy it, not to get smashed every night.

Then I'm not incorrect that you're projecting.
If you've been 6 drinks a year your whole life, then you're in don't-know-what-you're-talking-about territory.
For your edification, since OP isn't a marathoner, 50 miles means at least 3 days between, and chemical dependency is not possible that way with alcohol.
That leaves the Temperance Nut arguing for some kind of psychological dependency, and also claiming that it represents a "problem," an entirely subjective position.
I've noticed, over the years, you're one of the most overconfident, smug posters here. Instead of getting offended about that, why not let OP make his own decisions? He's asking for advice at most, not instruction.
