I just have to laugh at people talking about Democrats and spending. Its like they cannot even do the most basic thing and look up the deficit under different presidents. LRC is such a gold mine.
I looked but I could not find any deficit numbers for socialist presidents. At least in the USA.
Maybe you should look up the history of economies under socialist leaders outside the USA: Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, etc.
Still laughing?
I'll engage with you seriously for a second. Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, etc - you're right it would be terrible to live under one of those regimes. I agree with you 100% and I'm on the left. But I don't know of anyone who is advocating for that so if you think that's the leftist position you are misguided. Canada has universal healthcare. The Scandinavian countries are much more socialist than the US but routinely have the highest quality of life in the world. Germany & France have virtually free college.
So look - I don't know exactly what would work here in the US, and neither do you, we've never tried it. There is a history of communist and authoritarian governments that should give us all cause for concern, but modern-day "socialist" policies exist all over the world without any of that garbage you referenced so it is possible. In fact there is enough success that we on the left think it's time to start incorporating best practices from around the world here at home. Experiment with what works, discard what does not. I think this full-on capitalist experiment has had its ups and downs but there are enough examples of the downsides now (medical bankruptcy, crippling student debt, shrinking middle class) that it's probably time to tweak the formula to keep what's good but fix what's broken.
