Doesn't surprise me.
A friend of mine just moved from the greater Boston area. Got tired of the taxes and cost of living. He was telling me, even before the pandemic hit, him and other friends were thinking of getting out. The pandemic gave him more the reason.
While I like running, I've run the Boston marathon several times, I don't agree with it. For the costs and what not, it's not cool anymore. I get more out of running by myself or with friends than running a race and best of all it doesn't cost me a dime.
This summer about 100 of us got together an ran our own 15K race and we made our own Strava page and everything showing the results. We even had a professional timing company do up the results (one of our friends), used FinishLynx cameras and Hytec Meet Manager, so we could upload them. All for $0.
To me, the pandemic showed not only myself, but others, that races aren't all they are cracked up to be. MORE importantly they DON'T need to cost money!
I now look at these races not to encourage running, but as a slanderous way of stealing people's money. I know I'll get flack for this, but it's what I've (and others) learned throughout the past few months.
Meanwhile, Nike stock is at $137 a share...all is good in Vietnam and China
Would your friend have the timing system if formal races didn’t exist? I’m not saying all cash/formal races are good deals (and certainly not for what it seems you’re looking to get out of them), but it seems likely they underwrote at least one of the things you listed as a feature of your no-frills race.
I was sad to read this yesterday. Those were good jobs for those workers. I believe that was NB's second plant after Watertown but was the flagship back in the day.
It doesn't feel like something unusual. If you cannot keep yourself up, people will close you. It happens with factories, pharmacies, and even supermarkets. Many other companies are more prominent and less expensive and will be the people's choices and don't get surprised about that because the phenomena are evident, people go up to something cheaper, they are less looking for the quality. If you see an item from the factory priced way higher than it should be on https://www.valorexo.com/, you'll never want to buy it, even if it has a good quality.
Blame the unions! Can't afford all that expensive health care and pensions in the USA. Our government needs to bravely find ways to help bring manufacturing to our shores.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
