Hypothetical, how well would Nick Symmonds do if he came out of retirement? Lets say he started serious training this week. Would he
1) qualify for 2021 Olympic Trials?
2) qualify for 2022 WC in his hometown, Eugene?
What do you guys think?

no shot. The man time trials a mile and runs 5:00+. Totally washed. He was an amazing runner who is now a crossfitter. Nothing wrong with that. But I think he could run 1:54 if he trained seriously.
i'm not even sure if can lose weight in time for (1) let alone get into competition shape
i just don't think they're gonna get there wrote:

"1:54 if he trained seriously"...you don't know what you're talking about. Lmao
Dude was a frigging Olympian and he isn't even that old. 1:54 off serious training? More like 1:45.(1:46-47 if I have to guess)
he ran 1:59 a year ago. he's probably in worse shape now, but i think he could attain 1:54 within a year. just not sub-1:50.

His chances would barely exceed your own, He is done. And I say that with complete respect, he had a great career.

well he ran 1:49 his last year training seriously as a pro with the Brooks Beasts (2017). And he's probably gained cose to 30 pounds in fat and muscle and hasn't trained mid D at all. So 1:45 is outrageous and there's not really any reason to think he could go faster than 1:49. I would give him 1:52 MAYBE. IF he shaved 25 pounds and stayed healthy. but 1:45 dude? thats a good race for him in his prime. Those days are gone

He is pushing 37. He ran 1.47.8 in 2016. 1:49.4 in 2017. 1:54 might be a bit slow but I doubt he is going sub 1:50. If he could have been running. 1:45 he wouldn't have quit.
If he got a full 6 month base under him and trained decently.... I'd give him a 1:51 max.
No. Too much weight to lose and he is too injury prone
I think he could do it if the qualifying race gave $100 to the winner.....

I think he would run his BEST TIME EVER.....given how fat and out of shape he is (so basically like a 1:56)
DNF. Or, he would find a way to resurrect his beef with USATF and won't be able to compete.
Nick has nothing left to prove in the 800.
He is 36 now? I'd love to follow his journey on youtube to run sub-4 mile at age 40.
Age 37: run 4:40
Age 38: run 4:20
Age 39: run 4:10
Age 40: sub 4:00
He is only 11 months younger than Alan Webb. That would be awesome if they both came out of retirement and made the team for Tokyo.
I hear Coe is considering making athletes race in ninja turtle costumes to make the sport more appealing to younger demographics, so you never know.
It´s true he only ran 1:49 in his last year (2017), but he ran 1:44 only two year prior to that. And he said that he basically retired after he got injuried in 2016. Which means he ran 1:49 after a off year; not much training and overweight.
I think he can run 1:49 this summer if he loses couple of pounds, are able to stay injury free and get in a good amount of quality work.

Nick would have trouble making the team in 2021 or 2022 in his prime.
Brazier is a lot better then he ever was.
Murphy could beat him on any day.
Hoppel can kick the same as him.
I think Nick should definitely come out.........OF THE CLOSET.
