Awesome news. Initially the men's indoor and outdoor track teams were cut in September, but since then there has been a massive response from both alumni and the women's team (which threatened to stop competing for the school until the men's team was reinstated). The AD who made the cuts resigned last month and now the track team has been reinstated. Bravo!

Makes me almost wonder if they don't do this cuts to purposely get the alums to donate a ton to save them. But conspiracy theories are too grand.
What is the President's role in all of this? She lets the AD cut the sports, then fires the AD, then lets the new AD reinstate them all? Does that mean she's a good listener or is it incompetence on her part as well? -
No track or cross country recruit in their right mind should go to W&M now. Their athletic department is a joke.

Love this. Way to go women's teams and alumni. Hopefully this sends a message to other schools looking to use this as an opportunity to gut some sports. It may not be worth it.

Rojo - no, the former AD was and is an idiot. She came from Texas A&M and assumed SEC level funding ... especially for football. Also, W&M has NEVER made the NCAA men's BB tournament. Never in all of history. So no money and an expectation that football rules all. She was simply disconnected as to how a top academic institute works. Good riddance.

So all these guys did is pay out a severance package to Samantha Huge and get the alumni in the affected sports to raise money.
When are universities going to hire real business people to run athletic departments? -
They raised a bunch of money in addition to getting rid of the AD. So it turned into a win-win.

They’re only reinstated for an extra year while they work on a long term financial plan. Hopefully this is permanent. The women deserve huge credit for their role in this. I’m an alumnus and I pledged $1000 per year if they reinstated track. So it is possible this was a big ploy.

Sounds like they already do -
I want to salute the women's team for their courage in taking a difficult stand when they were not directly, immediately, affected. It just goes to show what solidarity and courage can do. Others should learn from this.

Of all the causes facing our world, country, and communities today, more people should take a stance on saving a running program for kids from predominantly upper middle class families?
Bummed to see running programs dealing with this and always liked racing at and against W&M but saving an opportunity for kids that have many many opportunities isn’t on my priority list. -

Gosh what a noble approach. "I wont support rich kids who just want to run, even if their cause is just, because other stuff exists." Reminds me what Martin Luther King wrote from the Birmingham jail: "Injustice anywhere is not a threat to justice everywhere. So dont worry about it."
By the way, for the record, not every athlete at William & Mary is a "rich kid". -

Any of these small schools who think they can be sustainable with football in their calculations are crazy.
They'd be better becoming powerhouses in the minor sports. Cheaper, and easier to find athletes.
Leave the football to the SEC etc. Focus on academics. And sports with smarter athletes. -
8.5% of tuition &fees paid by in-state students subsidized intercollegiate athletics
Out of state students pay the same $1,001 per semester (about 4% of their total bill) but it is likely built into the scads more that they pay in incremental tuition.
Here was a chance to begin to make a dent in decreasing the cost of college education, and they blew it.
