Why do races suck? Were they always this sucky? Local road race. $500 for first place. $0 for anyone else. Another road race has $250 for first place and 2 night hotel stay. Finisher medals for all other places. A third has prize money for largest team. Medals for top finishers. WTF is up with that? What am I missing? Can't they just divide up the prize money? Giving prize money because you suckered the most friends into joining you on your morning jog is so weird? Why aren't races rewarding winners/past winners? The also ran's will always show up as long as the medal is good and there's beer at the end.
Is there some aversion to only catering to non-competitive runners? Aside from their being 20 5k's any given weekend in a metro area, I don't see why there's a lack of prizes for top competitors. I even saw a race that gave a special award for the person that finished in the middle of the standings. Huh? Is it unusual or out of the ordinary for RD's to contact local competitive runners to join their race?
