Background: High school sophomore running 35-42 MPW, 13.99 100m, 59 sec. 400m, 11:30 2 mile, last season 5k PR was 19:04. Doing ~10 mile long runs and mile repeats x3 @ 5:45, and 6x800m @ 2:40.
The best I've done for the 5k this year is 19:30 and don't know what's going wrong, feels like a plateau. Hitting similar times as guys on the team that are running in the 17s and I feel gassed after the first mile of the 5k after a 5:45 1st mile, which never used to happen. Been incorporating off-season strength training, hills, long run, speed day, rest day, good nutrition etc.
Recently I did an 11 mile run where I started @ 7:45 pace and ended the 11th mile with a 6:20, which is what my 5k race pace has been.
Any advice on how to break 18:40s? Seems like my training is better than my racing is and trying to keep varsity spot as teammates progress.
