Sometimes when I go to my neighborhood track there is barrier at each corner of the track that swings out over the 1st 4 lanes. There’s a sign on it that says “use outside lanes”. That can make it tough if you want to do timed workout and want to know how far you are running. I found a conversion table on the net and made up a little calculator in Excel. Maybe it should have been obvious but it was a real eye opener for me. Here are the differences in distance/time in lanes 1-8
Lane Meters Meters* PerKilo PerMile
1 400.0 400.00 3:45 6:02
2 406.7 406.70 3:41 5:56
3 413.4 413.40 3:38 5:50
4 420.1 420.10 3:34 5:45
5 426.8 426.80 3:31 5:39
6 433.5 433.50 3:28 5:34
7 440.2 440.20 3:24 5:29
8 446.9 446.90 3:21 5:24
As you can see, there can be a huge difference in how long it takes you to get around the track, depending on which lane you are in.
Anybody who was watching Mottram in the world cup would have to have noticed how much extra ground he covered. I’ve never seen anything like it. He went inside, outside, inside, outside, to the rear, near the front, back to the rear, back up to the front etc. He was all over the place.
Anybody care to comment about that? Didn’t he run a tactically horrible race? Do any of you tracksters think about this when you are racing on the track?
