I would say Ashton is the inferior athlete. By far. Jumping and power events are the most important for an athlete. Running is very overrated. I wouldn't even consider Ashton in the top 20 of decathletes. Mayer is way above Ashten. Gets far more respect from me.
Multi-events at by far the weakest event in athletics.
Very little competition, it takes so much more resources to get into that it is prohibitive for much of the world and a celebration of being 'ok' at many events rather than elite at one or two.
There are lots of power athletes in the sprints or hurdles or jumps that could turn their hand at decathlon and do decent.
Christian Taylor can run a 45 400 as well as triple jump 18.20m. If he wanted to turn to Decathlon then he'd have no issues with long jump, hurdles, 100m, pole vault, high jump and then most these days are pretty bad at the throws and 1500m anyway.
