First of all they are down on the curb, and no good runner competes while looking straight down at the curb. Thus no runner could even see the lights anyway.
Plus, Cheptegei was ahead of the lights for most of his recent 5k world record.
The primary issue is not being on pace, as most good runners can usually tell if they are on pace or not. The issue is being fit and fast enough to keep maintaining that pace through the distance.
If there was a rabbit about a foot high traveling at an even speed all the way around the track then that could be useful.
Have you heard of peripheral vision bro? They aren't staring at the rail, maybe keeping it in the corner of their eye to gauge progress, maybe a quick glance every now and then.
By your logic, the lights are a nuisance and somehow hindered Chep? Then how did he set the WR running the entire second half alone?
