Illinois is on in a very limited fashion. No more than 50 runners, and most meets have to be held on school grounds because they’ve scared the park districts with lawsuit possibilities, so they won’t give contracts to meet hosts. Meets are also limited to Covid regions, so very small and low key. State series hasn’t been decided yet.
They haven’t gotten the memo yet that outdoor activities such as running are very low risk and these kids have been running in groups all summer with no outbreaks. Death rate is way down despite numbers rising somewhat. I’m in healthcare and can tell you, hospitalizations are not rising and patients who are coming in with Covid are far milder cases than back in March. This suggests the virus is weakening as expected, and younger people are fighting it off pretty readily.
Time will tell. I’m glad my kids get to compete, but man. This is rough. Maybe they’ll see their Hoosier neighbors pulling it off successfully and will expand the number of runners allowed. That’s all we can hope for around here.
