a true discussion of racism in these times is so nuanced that it's something that cant be fleshed out well on an internet message board. however, i'd like to point out that toni didnt actually address the central arguments of the article such as: how jogging was historically marketed and branded, and the author's repeated examples of our culture's fearful reactions to a black person who is running.
i would like to also take the point that african americans "choose not to be distance runners" and challenge people to consider those reasons why. i bet it lands on socioeconomic reasons, which in turns blows the discussion wide open.
i dont think toni really thought the topic through very well and instead made an emotional reaction to defend the sport he loves. i love it too, but we should know by now in 2020 that having a good pair of shoes and shorts is NOT all there is to it.
