why would el g retire, he is the best 1500 runner in the world. he wouldnt retire in his prime.
El G is still one of the best milers - perhaps still the best...but his prime was a few years ago when he set the WRs...now is a perfect time to hang it up - after the two Oly golds...
The Beatles went out with Abbey Road! :)
El G is certainly not in his prime. As far as I know, 2004 was the first season in which he did not post the world's best time, first time losing to Lagat, etc. I believe his plans are to retire in 2006, which i agree w/, see if he can take one (or 2 5000m?) golds at World Championchips...
No he changed his mind again and said he will compete in the olympic games 2008.
He plans to start training in septembre and will compete in the indoor world championship.
The problem with him is that you never know.
the problem with him is that he cries.

That's a relief. Otherwise he would've retired in 1999.
Anybody else want to point out that El G is beyond his prime?

It is with distressing frequency that some of you positively out yourselves as morons.
El Guerrouj ran a 3:27 1500m last year and closed the 1500 in Athens in 1:46 for the last 800 and 51 for the last 400, his fastest finish ever. He added a second Olympic gold in the 5,000, whereas in the past he had never won a single gold.
If "past his prime" os a 3:27 and double Olympic gold, I'd love to see what you jokers would say of a 3:30 1500m runner.
Idiots.
I am a BIG El G fan. I think besides the injury he has had and with being newly married, he just didn't have the motivation this year (even with the Worlds). Look for him to recommit himself for next year with the rise of Bazzi & Ramzi and others this season. Nothing like being forgotten to make someone say, remember me!
two pennies

They went out after Let it Be.
Abbey Road was recorded last. Let It Be release was delayed. :)
A part of me WANTS El G to retire. I know that sounds strange. I love the guy, and already, in 2005, I miss him. But retiring now is a great end. A perfect story.

I agree. Double gold, including the most impressively competitive 1500m race I've ever seen. 2004 was his best year easily.
there was an article about it when he made the decision not to run at worlds. basically he has lost the motivation to run, so he decided to take a break, and he plans to be back again next year. after reading a few articles about it i am under the impression that he may not be back. i hope he does come back next year.

I share that opinion. I just found it annoying that people kept saying the same thing over and over like it hadn't been mentioned.
El G is a smarter, more mature racer in championship events as evidenced by his two gold medals in the Olympics last year. I think people mean that at 30, El G is not in his PHYSICAL prime anymore, as evidenced by his not PRing at 1500/mile since 1998/99 respectively.

Right along those same lines, part of my wants 50 Cent to be murdered, a la Tupac.
El G is not retired. He's preparing for World Indoor Champs 2006. He'll probably be in the 3000m there, along with Kenenisa Bekele I'm sure. In 2006 his main goals are probably the 3000m/5000m world records, and to run at new meets he hasn't been to before, it's his final year
