A healthy Jakob is heavily favored at 5000m for sure. Hocker isn't good at the fast last 1000m that Jakob can reliably deploy to great success in the 5k. But of course Jakob's health and fitness is in real question.
I'd say 3k is about equal in a championship type setting between the two.
In a 1500m championship setting, nobody is favored anymore, it is simply too close and chaotic
I have a couple of problems with your post. First, Jakob hasn't run a particularly fast 5000, so it is pure speculation that he can run the legs out of 2026 Hocker. Second, a healthy Jakob is a rapidly fading memory, so what a healthy Jakob might be able to do isn't really relevant right now.
1. Jakob ran 12:48 way back in 2021. His 7:17 converts to a 12:30. But I'm not comparing their ability in time trials. Hocker's biggest weakness is the long drive from 800-1k out. Both of his major 5000m wins were races with a slow 2nd-to-last lap (neither Worlds nor USAs had a sub-60 penultimate lap). But Jakob can close a championship 5k in a 1:50 final 800m, which Hocker has never been able to do.
2. Agreed. Until Jakob can prove his fitness he's a total non-factor.

I didn’t even consider the possibility that Yared could make the 15 team and give his spot to Nico. That race was so close and good it feels like they’re all deserving. Especially since the “wild card” is going to a South African runner who’d get destroyed by the trio. I know the US athletes could’ve earned it by flying out to Europe but that’s asking a lot considering how strong and good the US circuit is.

People keep saying this but I can't remember an instance where he was dropped in a championship race due to a push from 800-1k out (except when he was still in Oregon).
She is not a 1:55 runner. She has only broken 1:58 four ties in her entire career. Wiley has already done it four times at her age. Mu has done it 10 times. Hurta has focused on the 800m her entire career and her best times ever:
1:55.89 1:57.53 1:57.62 1:57.85 1:58.09
One race doesn't make someone a "1:55-runner."
Actually, yes. It does.
Her entire pro career she has been inconsistent. Many USA team misses on bad days and then World Champ final and 1:55 on a good streak.
Missing indoor final not a shock, and back with some great races outdoor would not be a surprise either.

Hocker has been dropped many times. Did you not watch any of his races in 2024 or 2025?He needs to prove he can win like Jakob so we can conclude that peak Jakob wouldn’t challenge him. That’s how this works.

Did you read what I said? I specified a championship race.

No he doesn’t. He just needs to keep winning. Today was a memorable victory but a World Indoors double would replicate Jakobs best ever indoor champs. Granted, it looks like stronger fields this year. Paris 2024 was peak Jakob. If you’re saying for the 5,000, its hard to compare different races especially when Hockers style is so different than Jakobs.

Yes, he was dropped in the 2025 1500m and 2024 5000m US championships. He was also dropped many times in GST.

Hocker has been dropped many times, just look through his race results.

Actually, when you run 1:55 in a race, that makes you a 1:55 runner.
Obviously she did it once and will never do it again. Couldn’t even manage to get out of prelims. Embarrassing. She’ll either say it was a great run for her or blame someone

She's already been interviewed about the race and said neither of those things.
